MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Led by a career-high 14 rebounds from junior guard/forward
Evelina Avleeva, the Auburn Montgomery women's basketball recorded a season-best 50 rebounds in a 49-40 victory over visiting Montevallo on Thursday evening in Gulf South Conference action.
NOTES
• AUM improves to 8-11 on the season and 4-8 in Gulf South Conference action.
• Montevallo drops to 2-18 overall, 0-12 in GSC play
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• To go with her career-best rebounding total, Avleeva added nine points, three assists, three steals and three blocks. She has recorded at least three steals in each of the Warhawks last five contests.
• Freshman guard
Makaylla Bullard led the offense with 10 points while dishing out a team-best four assists.
• Senior guard
Shanna Strain set a plethora of season-highs in the victory with six rebounds, five points and a pair of steals. Fellow senior guard
Nadia Stewart also set season-highs with three assists and two steals.
• For Montevallo, Kiya Sain scored 10 points with three steals while Naukita Philpot pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trailing 11-4 midway through the opening frame, the Warhawks used an 8-0 run with five points from sophomore guard
Aaliyah Milord and a triple from Bullard to take a 12-11 lead. Montevallo responded with a basket, holding a 13-12 advantage going into the second stanza.
• The Warhawks opened up the second quarter with a 5-0 spurt, getting free throws from redshirt-sophomore center
Bailee Wolfe and Strain plus a layup from sophomore forward
Regan Croff to create a 17-13 lead. Montevallo countered with an 8-3 retort to make it 21-20, but a quick jumper from junior guard/forward
Jemaiya Lee flipped the one-point lead in favor of AUM, 22-21. Montevallo connected on a triple plus a free throw to take a three-point lead, with a late jumper from Lee making it 25-24 at the half.
• After a quick back-and-forth exchange that knotted up the score 29-all, AUM ended the quarter on an 11-0 run with Avleeva, Croff, Bullard and Stewart all contributing to the frame-ended spree.
• Montevallo clawed into the Warhawks lead in the final frame, using an 11-2 rally to bring it into two at 42-40. Croff made it a two-possession game with a layup, with free throws from senior guard
Kyla Rooks, Avleeva and Stewart before the final horn adding to the lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks converted on 16-55 shots, going 6-24 from three-point territory and 11-23 from the free throw line.
• UM went 15-54 from the field, 8-26 from beyond the arc and 2-11 from the free throw line.
• AUM scored 14 points in the paint versus four for Montevallo.
• The Warhawks dished out 12 assists while Montevallo had 10.
• 15 of AUM rebounds were on the offensive end. Montevallo recorded 36 total rebounds.
• AUM committed 15 turnovers, resulting in three Falcons' points. Montevallo committed 16 turnovers, leading to 12 points.
• AUM recorded nine steals and matched their season-high with seven blocks while Montevallo stole the ball six times with one blocks.
