ORLANDO, Fla. – Playing in their first match of the 2018 South Region Crossover between the Gulf South Conference and Sunshine State Conference the Auburn Montgomery volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Rollins College on Friday afternoon.
NOTES
• AUM falls to 9-15 on the season with a 4-2 mark in neutral site matches.
• Rollins improves to 4-17 overall.
• The Tars won the match 25-21, 25-22, 25-14.
• This was the first match between the two programs.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior middle blocker
Brianna Garvin led the team in kills with eight, accounting for 10.0 points with four block assists.
• Sophomore outside hitter
Alexandria Henry recorded a career-high seven kills while hitting for a .400 attack percentage.
• Sophomore outside hitter
Skylar Coppinger tallied a season-high six kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The first set saw the Tars run out to a 7-1 advantage before AUM was able to get a pair of points back. The Warhawks would claw their way back into the frame, pulling to within 16-13 on a kill by Henry. Rollins would go on a 5-1 run only to see the Orange & Black rally for four straight points to cut the advantage to 21-18. The two teams traded points back and forth until the Tars were able to close out the frame 25-21.
• The Warhawks took the early lead in the second set, battling with the Tars for a 10-7 advantage. Rollins would answer with a 4-0 run before a kill by Garvin tied the match at 11-11. Trading rallies to a 20-20 tie AUM was able the take a 21-20 lead on another kill by Garvin. However, the Tars were able to go on a 5-1 run to win the set 25-22.
• The third set saw the Orange & Black run out to a 4-1 lead before Rollins went on a 7-0 run. The Tars led 11-6 before kills by Garvin and
Nyah Whittlesey cut the advantage to 11-8. Rollins went on a 9-2 run to go up 20-10 before a kill by Coppinger halted the rally. Once again the teams traded serves but the damage by Rollins had been done, as they took the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• The match featured 17 tie scores and 10 lead changes.
• AUM posted five service aces while Rollins tallied eight.
• The Warhawks tallied 40 digs with the Tars tallying 39.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will face Florida Tech in a match set to begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning before facing Spring Hill College at 3:45 p.m. to finish out the tournament.
