Warhawks Battle Hard But Fall At Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Auburn Montgomery volleyball team fell to Gulf South Conference foe Valdosta State on Tuesday evening, dropping a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 25-16) decision on the campus of the Blazers.
 
NOTES
• AUM falls to 9-18 overall and 0-12 in league play.
• VSU improves to 13-14 and 8-4 in the GSC.
• The Blazers sweep the season series with the Warhawks, having earned a 3-1 victory on Sept. 21 in Montgomery.
• The Warhawks have now dropped 11 matches in a row, their longest losing skid in program history.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior middle blocker Brianna Garvin led the Warhawks in kills with 12, while hitting for a .500 attack percentage. She also tied her career high for blocks in a match with eight (four solo).
• Senior setter Carly Smart tallied 34 assists and a team-high 13 digs.
• Sophomore outside hitter Alexandria Henry tallied a career-high eight kills and two service aces.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The first set saw the Blazers jump out to a 10-3 advantage before AUM could force a side out. VSU eventually went up 21-11 before the Warhawks rallied for five straight points. After trading serves AUM was able to cut the VSU advantage to 23-18, but the Blazers were able to get the final to points of the set to take a 1-0 match lead.
• The Blazers came out strong in the second set, taking a 13-4 advantage before AUM could get its bearings. The Orange & Black would go on a 7-3 run to pull to within 16-11 before VSU could break serve. AUM eventually went on a 10-3 run to take a 21-20 lead before the Blazers tied the frame at 21-21. The Warhawks would finish the frame on a 4-0 run capped off by a Nyah Whittlesey kill to win the match 25-21 and tie the contest at one set apiece.
• Once again VSU would jump out to an early lead before AUM had to battle back from a 7-3 deficit before coming back and taking a 10-9 lead on a kill by Smart. With AUM leading 16-13 the Blazers started a comeback of their own, going on a 6-0 run before AUM could force a side out. The Warhawks rallied for three straight points to tie the set at 19-19, but VSU would finish the frame on a 6-2 run to win 25-21.
• The Warhawks took the early lead in the fourth set, going up 6-4 before VSU rallied for six straight points. AUM battled back and cut the lead to 12-10 on a kill by Garvin, but VSU would respond with a 9-3 rally. AUM would break serve and get a pair of points back, but the Blazers proved too much for AUM, closing the match on a 6-1 run to win the set 25-16 and the match 3-1.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• The match featured 14 ties scores and nine lead changes.
• VSU tallied 10 service aces while AUM tallied three.
• AUM posted 11 blocks to only three for the Blazers.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will be at home for their next two matches, hosting league foes Mississippi College on Friday and then West Alabama on Saturday. Friday's match is a "Pink Out" contest, with fans encouraged to wear pink to help raise breast cancer awareness. The match on Friday will begin at 6 p.m. while Saturday's will start at 1 p.m.
