Second Half Surge Propels Lee Past Men’s Basketball

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After taking a five-point lead into halftime the Lee University Flames started the second half on a 20-to-4 run over the first 10 minutes of the frame, en route to a 74-56 victory over Auburn Montgomery on Thursday evening in the Gulf South Conference for both schools in men's basketball play.
 
NOTES
• AUM falls to 4-3 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
• The Flames improve to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the GSC.
• The Warhawks are now 7-10 lifetime against Lee.
• AUM will play at Lee on Feb. 16 later this season.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Junior guard Carlos Bell led the team in scoring with 18 points. Bell also tallied five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.
• Junior center Aaron Reddick recorded his first career double-double and the third by a Warhawk this season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He also tallied a career-high five blocks on the night.
• Lee's Cody Jones tallied a season-high 27 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor, including 6-of-9 from behind the 3-point line.
• The Flames' Parker Suedekum tallied 10 assists in directing the Lee offense.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Warhawks jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Jones got Lee on the board with a trey at the 17:59 mark in the first half. AUM outscored the Flames 10-6 over the next seven minutes to go up 16-10 with 10:54 to play.
• Lee would go on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to take its first lead at 17-16 with 9:18 left in the first. AUM would regain the lead moments layer on a Bell reverse layup to put the Warhawks up 18-17.
• The two teams would trade the lead back and over the next six minutes before Lee was able to go up 33-32 with 2:59 to go until the break. A 7-1 run by the Flames was finally broken by Mikel Davis who hit a layup to cut the deficit to 40-35 heading into the half.
• The Flames would start the second half on a 20-to-4 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half to go up 60-39 with 9:19 to play before Reddick hit a jumper in the paint to try to stop the bleeding for the Warhawks. However, the Flames would eventually push their lead to as much as 26 with 5:06 to play, when Jones delivered a dagger in the form of a trey to put Lee up 69-43.
• AUM would outscore the Flames the rest of the way, but the damage had already been done as the Warhawks would drop their first home game of the season 74-56.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• Lee won the rebounding battle, 35-32.
• The Flames connected on 31-62 field goals, shooting 50 percent from the floor.
• AUM committed 15 turnovers to only nine for Lee.
• The game featured 13 lead changes and two tie scores, all in the first half.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host GSC foe the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Saturday afternoon at the AUM Gymnasium. The game is part of a doubleheader with the two women's programs, and is set to begin at 2 p.m. with the men's teams beginning at 4 p.m. It will also be Military Appreciation Day at AUM, with service members receiving free admission with military I.D.
