MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Junior guard/forward
Evelina Avleeva recorded her fourth double-double of the season on Saturday afternoon with 11 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, propelling the Auburn Montgomery women's basketball team to a 56-47 victory over visiting Christian Brothers on Senior Day.
NOTES
• AUM improves to 9-17 on the season and 5-14 in Gulf South Conference action.
• Christian Brothers falls to 9-16, 8-11 in GSC play.
• Avleeva's 17 rebounds are the fifth-most by an individual from the Gulf South Conference this season.
• AUM's 18 assist sets the Warhawks' record for assists in a GSC game.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• To go with her double-double, Avleeva matched the game-high with three steals.
• Sophomore guard
Aaliyah Milord chipped in 10 points with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
• Freshman guard
Makaylla Bullard scored 10 points with four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
• Senior guards Nadia Steward and
Shanna Strain both scored nine points.
• Redshirt sophomore center
Bailee Wolfe boasted a game-high three blocks with four rebounds.
• For Christian Brothers, Brynne Lyte scored 17 points while Mikaela Blissett pulled down 15 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Fueled by five three-pointers and a pair of free throws, Christian Brothers held a 17-12 lead after the first quarter. Trailing 13-7 midway through the frame, AUM used a layup from Milord and triple from Bullard to cut the deficit to one, 13-12. CBU ended the quarter with a triple and free throw to lead by five going into the second.
• After exchanging three-pointers to begin the stanza, AUM went on a 6-0 run with Avleeva, Milord and Bullard all scoring to propel the Warhawks to a 21-20 lead. CBU flipped the one-point lead with their first two-point basket of the contest before triples from sophomore guard
Alex Brown and Stewart sandwiching a Bucs' layup gave AUM a 27-24 lead. The Visitors retook the lead off back-to-back baskets, but a triple from Avleeva gave the Warhawks a 30-28 edge at halftime.
• AUM began the second half with a 12-1 run, creating a double-digit separation at 42-29. CBU cut into the separation with a 6-0 run, but an AUM jumper before the frame ended made it 44-35.
• CBU got as close as five in the final quarter, opening up with back-to-back points before a triple from Steward and layup from Avleeva recreated a double-digit advantage at 49-39. The Bucs responded with an equal retort, making it a two-possession game at 49-44 before a 6-0 retort by the Warhawks with Bullard, Millord and Avleeva all contributing made it 55-44. CBU scored one more basket, while a made free throw on each side created the final score.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• The Warhawks converted on 21-59 shots, going 9-27 from three-point territory and 5-8 from the free throw line.
• CBU went 16-54 from the field, 8-25 from beyond the arc and 7-12 from the free-throw line.
• AUM held a 44-36 edge in total rebounds and 12-8 in offensive boards.
• Both sides scored 12 points in the paint.
• AUM committed 11 turnovers, resulting in nine Bucs' points. The visitors committed 15 turnovers, leading to 12 points.
• AUM got 25 points off the bench, Christian Brothers got five.
• AUM recorded 11 steals with six block while CBU stole the ball four times with two blocks.
