Softball To Host First GSC Series Against Alabama Huntsville This Weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery softball team will host its first Gulf South Conference three-game series in program history this weekend, playing league foe Alabama Huntsville beginning on Friday evening at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

About the Warhawks
AUM is 5-2 on the season with a 2-1 mark in league play. The Warhawks fell to North Alabama 5-1 in their last contest on Sunday after defeating reigning GSC champion Mississippi College and Union University on Saturday.
 
The two teams split a doubleheader last season, with the Chargers earning a 5-1 victory in game one before AUM won a 4-2 decision in game two. Sophomore pitcher Chanel Newcomer picked up the victory in the contest, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out five over 7.0 innings.
 
Freshman third baseman Hannah Dailey leads the team in batting average with a mark of .474. Dailey is 7-for-8 in stolen bases with 10 runs scored and 10 total bases, driving in six runs for the Warhawks. Catcher Abby Krueger leads the team in runs batted in with seven, while freshman infielder Gracie Harris leads the team in total bases with 11.
 
Newcomer leads the team in innings pitched at 17.0 and strikeouts with 14 over six appearances (three starts). Michaelyn Foster and Taylor Tiffany each have an earned run average of 1.17 with Natalie Johnsey posting a mark of 2.15.  
 
About the Chargers
UAH heads into the weekend at 9-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Chargers went 1-2 at the GSC Opening Weekend Festival in their last contests, salvaging the weekend with a 7-5 victory over West Georgia on Sunday.
 
The Chargers reached last year's GSC championship game after going 24-9 in league play, but fell to Mississippi College in the championship game. UAH closed out the year going 1-2 at the NCAA South II Regional to finish the season with a record of 42-17.
 
Freshman Layton Murphy leads the pitching staff with a record of 7-2 and an ERA of 2.07. Murphy has tossed 50.2 innings, tallying 35 strikeouts over 11 appearances.
 
Infielder Kiara Ackles leads the team offensively with a .405 batting average, recording three home runs, two triples and two doubles while driving in 13 RBI. Ackles has a slugging percentage of .738 over 13 starts.

The Warhawks will host non-conference opponent Clark Atlanta on Thursday, March 1 in their next contest, playing the Panthers in a doubleheader at the AUM Softball Complex at 1 p.m.
