MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team either led or were tied with the visiting University of Alabama in Huntsville going into the seventh innings in both games of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, but late runs for the Chargers gave them the series sweep via 3-1, 4-3 scores.
NOTES
• AUM falls to 6-6 overall, 0-3 in Gulf South Conference action.
• Alabama Huntsville improves to 6-3, 3-0 in GSC play.
• Four of the Chargers seven in the doubleheader came after the sixth inning.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS (GAME 1)
• Senior southpaw
Garrett Deloney tossed a career-high nine strikeouts, the most by a Warhawks' pitcher this season, in 6.2 innings with one run allowed off eight hits.
• Junior second baseman
Jonathan Brandt went 2-4 with a double and walk.
• Redshirt-sophomore designated hitter
Hayden Friesen went 2-4 at the plate with a double.
• Senior third baseman
Parker Moman went 2-3 with a walk.
• For UAH, Nolan Ramsey went 3-5 while Ben Rhodes and Brady Bedingfield each posted home runs and Taylor Clemons held AUM scoreless over 2.2 innings of relief for the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
• Rhodes began the game with a leadoff home run, propelling the Chargers to an early 1-0 lead
• AUM knotted up the score in the bottom of the sixth, using a sacrifice fly from junior left fielder
Todd Burkett to score Moman, who reached base with a walk and advanced to third off Friesen's double.
• UAH used its second home run of the contest, this one from Brady Bedingfield, to retake the lead 2-1 in the eigth.
• The visitors added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, using a single from Jack Stamper to score Will Acuff
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 1)
• AUM tallied seven hits while Alabama Huntsville recorded 12.
• The Warhawks left 12 runners on base, UAH stranded 10.
• UAH recorded the lone error in the contest.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS (GAME 2)
• Brandt went 2-3 with his second home run of the weekend.
• Moman went 2-3.
• Senior right fielder
Nathan Langley went 2-4 with a run scored.
• Friesen went 2-4 with a RBI.
• Redshirt-junior right-handed pitcher
Connor Smith got the start in game two, logging five innings with two runs, one earned, off five hits with three strikeouts.
• For UAH, Ben Rhodes went 4-4 with two runs scored while Brooks Brophy held tossed the final two innings and kept AUM off the scoreboard for the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
• A fielding error by the Warhawks with two outs in the first allowed UAH to take an early 1-0 lead.
• AUM responded in the bottom of the innings, leading off with a single from Langley with the senior touching home plate on a groundout by Friesen.
• The Warhwaks took the lead in the bottom of the third, using a two-out solo home run by Brandt to make it 2-1
• UAH tied the score 2-all off a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth, platting Zach Duvall
• AUM reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth, as a groundout for junior second baseman
Harrison Morris scored Burkett to make it 3-2 going into the final inning.
• A throwing error for the Warhawks allowed Ben Rhodes to score, knotting up the score at 3-3. AJ Walden, who reached base because of the error, scored the game-winning run off a triple from Ramsey.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 2)
• AUM recorded 10 hits versus seven for the visitors.
• The Warhawks left nine runners on base, UAH stranded seven
• AUM recorded three errors, resulting in three Chargers' runs.
