Valdosta State Sweeps Doubleheader – Series With Warhawks

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery softball team dropped a pair of games to Gulf South Conference foe Valdosta State on Friday afternoon, dropping game one 6-1 and game two 4-2 as the Blazers swept the doubleheader and the series over the Warhawks.
 
NOTES
• AUM falls to 12-9 on the season with a 7-8 mark in league play.
• VSU improves to 22-7 overall and 10-5 in the GSC.
• The Blazers earned a 2-0 victory over AUM in game one of the series yesterday.
• The Warhawks have now dropped four games in a row.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Freshman Michaelyn Foster hit the first home run of her career in game two for AUM.
• Sophomore Jaycie Walker was 2-for-5 on the day, driving in one run.
• VSU's Jessica Mohl was 4-for-8 from the leadoff spot in both games, driving in three RBI.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
• The Blazers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Mohl scored from third on a wild pitch.
Hannah Dailey tied it up for the Warhawks in the bottom of the first, plating Parker Pinholster on a single up the middle to tie the game up at 1-1 heading to the second.
• VSU would score one run in each of the next five innings highlighted by a Brandy Morgan home run in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead into the seventh.
• AUM would be unable to rally late and would fall 6-1 to Valdosta.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME ONE
• AUM scored one run on five hits committing two errors.
• VSU scored six runs on six hits with one error.
Natalie Johnsey got the start and lasted 3.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits with one strikeout to fall to 2-4 on the season.
• Kathryn Carter earned the victory for the Blazers to improve to 7-2 on the season. Carter allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts while tossing a complete game.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
Catcher Abby Krueger would give AUM a 1-0 lead in the first, plating Morgan Duschell with a single to left.
• VSU's Logan Hill would answer in the top of the second, blasting a solo shot to left to tie the game at 1-1.
• Foster would answer in the bottom of the third with a solo homer of her own, giving AUM a 2-1 advantage.
• The Blazers would score two runs in the top of the fourth, plating runs on a Cassey Corneluis sacrifice fly and a Danielle Patterson single to left to take a 3-2 lead over the Warhawks.
• Centerfielder Taylor Hartenbach would give VSU an insurance run in the top of the fifth when she hit a sac fly to plate Morgan and give the Blazers a 4-2 lead.
• AUM managed only one hit over the final three innings to fall 4-2 to the Blazers.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME TWO
• AUM scored two runs on four hits with no errors.
• VSU scored four runs on 10 hits with no errors.
• Foster got the start for AUM in game two and allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out four to fall to 3-1 on the season.
• Kasie Johnson was credited with the win for the Blazers to improve to 6-2 this year. Johnson pitched all seven innings striking out two.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host in-town rival Huntingdon College on Thursday in a doubleheader set to begin at 5 p.m. The games were originally scheduled for this coming Tuesday but were moved due to a scheduling conflict.
