AUM Snaps Losing Skid With Doubleheader Sweep Of Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery softball team snapped a four-game losing skid with a doubleheader sweep of cross-town foe Huntingdon College on Thursday afternoon, earning an 8-0 victory in game one followed by a 9-0 victory in game two.
 
NOTES
• AUM improves to 14-9 on the season with a 7-6 mark at home.
• HC falls to 11-15 and 6-6 in road games.
• The Warhawks won both games in the fifth inning in walk-off fashion.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Sophomore Parker Pinholster went 3-for-6 on the day, with two runs batted in and two runs scored. She also had a stolen base.
• Freshman Michaelyn Foster got the start in game one and pitched a complete game shutout. Foster gave up only one hit while walking three and striking out three.
• Sophomore Chanel Newcomer earned the win in game two pitching four no-hit innings while striking out five Hawks.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
• The Warhawks took the early lead in game one when catcher Abby Krueger laid down a sacrifice bunt to plate third baseman Hannah Dailey from third, giving AUM a 1-0 advantage in the first.
• AUM would add runs in the bottom of the second and fourth, scoring on a HC error and a Dailey single to center, respectively.
• With two on and two out in the fifth, an error by the Hawks allowed Amy Persinger to score from third to give AUM a 4-0 advantage. After the Hawks loaded the bases Dailey drew a walk to plate another run and give the Warhawks a 5-0 lead.
• While still in the fifth with two outs senior Kalee Sparks blasted a single up the middle to score a pair of runs to put AUM up 7-0. After another walk Persinger drew a walk with the bases loaded to give the Warhawks an 8-0 lead in the fifth, ending the contest.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME ONE
• AUM tallied eight runs on four hits with one error.
• HC was held scoreless with four hits while committing four errors.
• Foster earned the win for AUM, improving to 4-1 on the year.
• Lindsey Selph (5-8) took the loss for the Hawks, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits in 3.1 innings of work.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
• AUM would score in the bottom of the first once again to go up 1-0 in game two, plating a run on a Sparks sac bunt squeeze play that plated designated player Jaycie Walker from third.
• The Warhawks would go up 2-0 in the second, scoring on an error that allowed first baseman Kendall Tucker to score from second.
• After being held scoreless in the third the Warhawks tallied three runs in the fourth highlighted by a Pinholster RBI-single. After four complete AUM led 5-0.
• Another two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth gave AUM the victory. Pinholster beat out a close play at first to earn another RBI and give the Warhawks a 6-0 lead. After a walk by the Hawks Foster singled to left to score Pinholster, then Walker doubled to left-center to plate two runs and give AUM the 9-0 win.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME TWO
• AUM scored nine runs on eight hits with one error.
• HC had no runs on no hits while committing two errors.
• Newcomer improved to 7-4 with the victory, giving way to Cydney Sizemore in the top of the fifth. Sizemore walked two and struck out three batters while not giving up a hit.
• Madison Hunt was credited with the loss for the Hawks, dropping to 4-4 on the season after allowing four runs (three earned) on two hits.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will travel to Cleveland, Tenn., to face Gulf South Conference foe Lee University in a three-game series set to begin Friday at 3 p.m. with a doubleheader between the two squads. Saturday's game will begin at 11 a.m., with all three games being pushed up due to inclement weather expected in the Tennessee area this weekend.
