Softball Splits Doubleheader With Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Playing in their first Gulf South Conference road series this weekend the Auburn Montgomery softball team split the day one doubleheader with league foe Delta State on Saturday, earning a 9-1 victory in game one in six innings before dropping game two 1-0 to close out the day at University Field.
 
NOTES
• AUM moves to 7-5 on the season and 4-4 in GSC play.
• DSU moves to 10-10 this year with a 4-4 mark in league action.
• Game three will begin at noon tomorrow on the campus of the Lady Statesmen.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
Michaelyn Foster improved to 2-0 on the season with the game one victory, allowing only one run on four hits in six innings of action.
Natalie Johnsey fell to 1-2 this year after taking the loss in game two. Johnsey allowed one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
• Designated player Jaycie Walker went 3-for-5 at the plate on the day, with two runs scored and a run batted in.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
• The Warhawks took the early advantage, tallying three runs in the top of the second. Kasidy Thompson singled to right to score Jaycie Walker. Abby Krueger also scored on the play thanks to a DSU error. Kendall Tucker reached on a fielder's choice which plated Thompson to give AUM the lead 3-0.
• DSU got a run back in the bottom of the second, when Carlie Vice hit a solo homer to left center.
• AUM tallied four more runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a Walker double to take a 7-1 advantage.
• The Warhawks scored two more runs in the top of the, plating runs on a double steal and a DSU error to go up 9-1.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME ONE
• AUM tallied nine runs on eight hits with one error.
• DSU scored one run on four hits while committing four errors.
• Taylor Johnson took the loss for the Lady Statesmen, falling to 5-4 on the season after allowing six runs on seven hits with three K's.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
• The two teams battled back and forth as both pitchers were dialed in for their respective teams. AUM was able to get a runner to second in the fifth but could not get the run home.
• After failing to score a run in the bottom of the third after getting a runner to third, DSU was able to scratch a run across in the bottom of the sixth after first baseman Kelly Byrd hit a two-out single to right-center to plate rightfielder Mallory Myers from first.
• Third baseman Hannah Dailey led the top of the seventh with a single, but the next three batters went down in order.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME TWO
• AUM tallied two hits and left three runners on base.
• DSU scored one run on four hits while committing two errors.
• Nicole Fullilove picked up the victory to improve to 2-1 on the season. Fullilove tallied eight K's tossing the two-hitter, with only one walk issued.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host non-conference foe Blue Mountain College on Monday, March 5, in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at the AUM Softball Complex.
