CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Auburn Montgomery softball team won its first series as a member of the Gulf South Conference on Sunday afternoon at University Field, defeating league foe Delta State 3-0 to take the series 2-1 as pitcher
Chanel Newcomer pitched a complete game two-hitter with a career-high seven strikeouts to her credit.
NOTES
• AUM moves to 8-5 on the season and 5-4 in GSC play.
• DSU moves to 10-11 this year with a 4-5 mark in league action.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Newcomer improved to 4-3 on the year with her performance, allowing only two hits and one walk in the contest.
• Senior outfielder
Amy Persinger drove in the game-winning run, plating
Kendall Tucker from third on a sacrifice bunt.
• Freshman infielder
Gracie Poe had a pinch-hit double to add to AUM's lead.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Game three proceeded much like game two, with neither team plating a runner over the first five innings.
• Designated player
Jaycie Walker led off the top of the sixth with a double to leftfield. Tucker pinch ran for Walker and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Persinger then drove in the game's first run on a sac bunt which plated Tucker from third.
• Persinger reached base on the sacrifice, then was driven in by Poe's pinch hit double to give AUM a 2-0 lead.
• AUM added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when
Kalee Sparks hit a sacrifice fly to score
Hannah Dailey from third.
• DSU would be unable to get any runs across in the bottom of the seventh.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• AUM scored three runs on five hits while committing one error.
• DSU recorded two hits with no errors.
• The Warhawks hit four doubles in the contest.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host non-conference foe Blue Mountain College on Monday, March 5, in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at the AUM Softball Complex.
