MONTGOMERY, Ala. – History was made at the AUM Baseball Complex on Friday evening, as the Auburn Montgomery baseball team bested the visiting West Alabama Tigers 6-1 for the program's first Gulf South Conference victory.
NOTES
• AUM improves to 7-10 overall, 1-6 in Gulf South Conference play.
• West Alabama drops to 6-12, 3-4 in GSC action.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Senior southpaw
Garrett Deloney (2-1) earned the win in the Warhawks' first GSC triumph, logging 7.0 innings on the mound with no earned runs allowed while striking out seven Tigers with seven hits and one unearned run.
• Junior left fielder
Logan Nix posted his first multi-hit outing as a Warhawk, going 2-3 with a RBI, run scored and walk.
• Senior shortstop
Nathan Langley went 2-4 with a run scored, walk and stolen base.
• Junior right fielder
Aaron Hill went 2-4 with a run scored.
• Freshman right-handed pitcher
Sam Steigert earned his team-leading second save of the season, tossing the final two innings with only one hit allowed.
• For West Alabama, Joel Murphy and Luke Phillips each posted two hits while Steffon Moore (3-3) got the start and allowed six runs off five hits in 3.1 innings with seven walks and five strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Opening the contest with back-to-back singles from Austin Moffett and Murphy, an error by the Warhawks with two outs allowed Moffett to touch home plate and give UWA a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first.
• AUM took the lead in the bottom of the first, leading off with a walk for senior center fielder
Donovan Chandler and single for Langley before two UWA wild pitches allowed both Warhawks to score. After loading the bases with redshirt sophomore
Hayden Friesen, senior third baseman
Parker Moman and sophomore catcher
Kyle Khoury all drawing walks, a two-out single from Nix plus a wild pitch platted Friesen and Moman to create a 4-1 score.
• The Warhawks added a pair insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases via walks for Nix and Langley sandwiching a bunt single from Hill, with a single from junior second baseman
Jonathan Brandt and sacrifice fly by Friesen on back-to-back at bats platted Nix and Hill to make it 6-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• AUM tallied nine hits while West Alabama had eight.
• The Warhawks left eight runners on base, UWA stranded six.
• AUM recorded one error, allow the Tiger's lone run to score.
