PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team began a three-game Gulf South Conference series at West Florida on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader, falling to the host Argonauts 1-0 in the opening contest before falling 9-1 in the second game of the twin bill.
NOTES
• AUM falls to 16-24 overall, 5-18 in Gulf South Conference action.
• West Florida improves to 27-11, 17-5 in GSC play.
• UWF's one run in the opening game of the doubleheader matches their lowest run total of the season, with the previous one-run outing for the Argos being in a 4-1 loss at nationally-ranked Florida Southern on Saturday, Feb. 3.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS (GAME 1)
• Senior righty
Garrett Deloney held West Florida to one run, their lowest run total in a GSC contest this season, over eight innings with eight hits allowed and five strikeouts.
• Junior left fielder
Matthew Zielonko reached base in all three of his appearances in the batter's box, going 1-1 with two walks.
• Senior center fielder
Donovan Chandler went 1-4
• For West Florida, Nick Kerkmann went 2-3 while Tony Kucera tossed a complete game with two hits allowed and five strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
• After retiring the first two batters in the bottom of the first, a single and double in back-to-back at bats platted Joey Bend to give UWF an early 1-0 edge.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 1)
• AUM tallied two hits while West Florida had eight.
• The Warhawks left four runners on base, UWF stranded six.
• Both sides had one error.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS (GAME 2)
• Chandler went 2-3 with a walk.
• Junior third baseman
Logan Nix went 1-2 with a run scored and walk.
• Junior third baseman
Todd Burkett went 1-1 with a double.
• Redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher
Hank Scott got the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs off nine hits over 2.2 innings of work with two strikeouts.
• For West Florida, Matthew Estrada went 3-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
• UWF got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, loading the bases off a double, walks and single before a single from Estrada platted two Argonauts to take a 2-0 lead.
• AUM responded in the top of the third, loading the bases via a single from Chandler, fielding error by UWF and walk for senior first baseman
Curtiss Johnson before a walk for Zielonko sent Chandler home to make it 2-1.
• The hosts scored seven runs off seven hits in the bottom of the third to create a 9-1 score.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (GAME 2)
• AUM tallied four hits while West Florida had 12.
• The Warhawks left 10 runners on base, West Florida stranded nine.
• Both sides had one errors.
