MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery softball team completed its series sweep of Gulf South Conference opponent Christian Brothers on Saturday afternoon, taking game one 3-2 before earning a 10-2 victory in six innings in game two as the Warhawks celebrated senior day in style with the doubleheader sweep at the AUM Softball Complex.
NOTES
• AUM improves to 27-15 on the season with a 17-13 mark in the GSC.
• CBU falls to 9-37 with a 1-29 record in league play.
• Seniors
Amy Persinger,
Rose Schmidt and
Kalee Sparks were honored before game one, playing in their final home games of their careers with the Warhawks.
• The series sweep by AUM was their second Gulf South Conference sweep of the season.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Freshman catcher
Abby Krueger went 4-for-5 on the day with three runs batted in and two runs scored.
• Fellow underclassman
Michaelyn Foster picked up the win in game one striking out five in 5.0 innings of work while going 2-for-4 at the plate on the day with two runs scored and a RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
• The Bucs scored a run in the first inning for the second game in a row, plating Holly Oyenhart from third on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Olivia Parsels.
• AUM tied the game in the third, scoring on a fielding error by CBU to tie the game at 1-1.
• The Warhawks would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth when centerfielder
Parker Pinholster tripled to center with
Gracie Harris on second to give AUM a 2-1 lead. Krueger then collected her first RBI of the day on a single up the middle that plated Pinholster and gave the Warhawks a much needed insurance run.
• After neither team scored in the fifth or sixth, CBU's Jenna Cotter cut AUM's lead in half with a solo homer to left to pull the Buccaneers to with 3-2. However, AUM was able to close out the contest to earn the one-run victory.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME ONE
• AUM scored three runs on six hits with no errors.
• CBU scored two runs on five hits with two errors.
• Foster improved to 7-2 on the season, allowing one run on two hits in five innings of work. Sophomore
Chanel Newcomer earned her fourth save of the season by pitching the final two innings.
• Sierra Anderson was credited with the loss for the Bucs, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits over 4.0 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
• Game two saw the Warhawks explode for five runs in the bottom of the second, scoring on a Pinholster sacrifice bunt with runners at second and third, another Krueger RBI-single, a Foster double that plated Krueger from first, and a two-out throwing error by the CBU third baseman that allowed to runs to score.
• Ashlyn Hinton responded for CBU in the top of the third with a two-run blast that cut the AUM lead to 5-2.
• The Warhawks tallied three runs in the bottom of the fourth starting with Foster coming home on an error by the shortstop, followed by a
Jaycie Walker double that scored
Jasmine Thompson from second, and a single by
Hannah Dailey through the right side that scored Walker from second.
• Kruger would give AUM a 9-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth when she collected her third RBI of the day on a single up the middle that plated
Rose Schmidt from third after Schmidt tripled with one out to get on base.
• After not allowing a run in the top of the sixth the Warhawks sent one batter to the plate in the bottom of the frame. Needing just one run to Eight-Run Rule the Bucs sophomore
Kendall Tucker launched a solo shot to right to end the game in a walk off for the Warhawks, who earned the 10-2 victory in six innings.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE – GAME TWO
• AUM scored 10 runs on 10 hits with no errors.
• CBU scored two runs three hits while committing three errors.
•
Natalie Johnsey earned the win in relief to improve to 6-6 on the season. Johnsey did not allow a base-runner in 2.1 innings of work to earn the victory.
• The Bucs' Cotter was credited with the loss, allowing five runs (all unearned) on four hits in 2.0 innings.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will close out the 2018 season next weekend when they travel to Carrollton, Ga., to take on GSC foe West Georgia in a three-game series beginning on Saturday. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. followed by a single game on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. as well.
