CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team saw its 2018 season come to an end on Saturday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader at West Georgia. The Warhawks fell in the opener 8-3, while they dropped the nightcap 9-4.
NOTES
• The Warhawks concluded the 2018 season with a 20-30 overall record, including a 9-21 record in Gulf South Conference play.
• West Georgia improved to 31-16 on the year and have now won nine straight games. The Wolves upped their GSC record to 17-13.
• The doubleheader marked the final collegiate game for
Donovan Chandler,
Nathan Langley,
Forrest Smith,
Tanner Russell,
Garrett Deloney,
Parker Moman and
Curtiss Johnson.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS (Game 1)
•
Matthew Zielonko was one of seven Warhawks to record a hit, hitting his second home run of the season.
•
Kyle Khoury finished 1-for-3 at the plate, with a RBI.
•
Brett Lightsey tossed 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief.
• Ben Utley was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and a run batted in for UWG.
• Cade Marlowe finished 3-for-4, with a triple, two runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base.
• Greyson McLeod improved to 5-1 on the mound, tossing seven innings of four-hit ball, while striking out nine.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
• Chandler put the Warhawks up 1-0 in the top of the first inning when he scored on an error by second baseman Brian Dansereau.
• UWG tied the score with a run in the second on a RBI double by Logan Taylor, scoring Price Peters, who also doubled off Deloney (3-5).
• The Wolves took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the third inning. Dansereau plated Christopher Michals with a sacrifice fly, before Marlowe singled in Utley later in the inning.
• West Georgia extended its lead to 4-1 on a RBI triple by Tucker Breen in the fourth inning.
• The Warhawks trimmed the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth, when Khoury singled in Johnson, who led off the inning with a single.
• After Marlowe scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Wolves put the game out of reach in the seventh on RBIs by Utley, Marlowe and Peters.
• AUM provided the final margin on Zielonko's solo home run.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (Game 1)
• West Georgia finished with 11 hits, while the Warhawks tallied seven.
• UWG committed the only two errors in the contest.
• Each team left five runners on base.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS (Game 2)
• Moman finished 3-for-3 with a double for the Warhawks.

Todd Burkett was 3-for-4 with a run scored.
• Chandler tallied a pair of hits and drove in a run.
• Langley finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. He tallied four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings on the mound, but fell to 4-2 on the year with the loss.

Zach Cumbie was 1-for-2 with a RBI and a run.
• Gabriel Wurtz finished 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and a game-high four RBIs.
• Dansereau had three hits and scored twice.
• Utley and Marlowe added two hits apiece.
• Andres Fernandez improved to 5-4 on the year with five innings of three-run ball.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)
• The Wolves took a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, using four hits to take the lead for good. Marlowe put UWG on the board with a RBI single, before Wurtz drove in a pair with a single later in the inning.
• Michals extended the UWG lead to 4-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
• Langley plated the first run for the Warhawks on a RBI groundout in the third inning, scoring Cumbie who led off the frame with a single.
• Cumbie cut the margin to 4-2 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, scoring Burkett.
• The Warhawks pulled to within one in the fifth, when Langley came home after Zielonko was thrown out on a stolen base attempt.
• The Wolves took complete control of the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Wurtz and Lane Griffith picking up two-run hits.
• Chandler capped the scoring with an RBI single in the sixth, scoring
Harrison Morris.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE (Game 2)
• The two teams combined for 25 hits, 13 by the Wolves and 12 by AUM.
• The Warhawks stranded 10 runners, while UWG left four runners on base.
• The Wolves committed the only error of the game.
