Newcomer Tate Dean Propels Warhawks To 2-1 Victory

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Junior defender Tate Dean started his Warhawks' career on a high-note, notching a pair of goals in Auburn Montgomery's 2-1 victory over Southern Wesleyan University on Thursday evening at the AUM Soccer Complex in the season opener for both teams.
 
NOTES
• AUM improves to 1-0 on the season while SWU falls to 0-1.
• The Warhawks won their season opener for the first time since the 2015 season.
• There was a 40-minute lightning delay.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Dean tallied goals in the 32nd and 75th minute from his left back position.
• Senior defender Cedarian Brunelle was pressed into duty as goalkeeper for AUM, and he kept a clean sheet until the 88th minute tallying three saves in the process.
Berkly Louviere, Sverrir Smarason and Alexander Wagner all notched assists in the contest for the Orange & Black.
  
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The game opened as a back and forth affair until a lightning delay at the 39:05 mark sent both teams into the locker room.
• Once play resumed the two teams traded possessions back and forth until Dean took a long through ball from Wagner and headed it over the SWU keeper to put the Warhawks up 1-0 in the 32nd minute.
• Dean would put the Warhawks up 2-0 in the 75th minute when he took a pass from Louviere off of a corner by Smarason and headed it in again from just outside the six.
• Grant Kiker was able to get the Warriors on the board in the 88th minute when he scored off of a failed clearance by the Warhawks to cut the AUM lead in half.
• AUM would be able to hold on over the final three minutes to secure its first victory of 2018.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• Each team tallied three shots in the first and five shots in the second, with a total of four shots on goal by each squad.
• SWU had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-3.
• AUM committed eight fouls while the Warriors committed six.  
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host Florida Tech on Saturday, Sept. 1 at the AUM Soccer Complex, beginning at 6 p.m.
