MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery volleyball team tallied a season-high 11 service aces en route to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-13) victory over LeMoyne-Owen College on Friday evening, as part of the first ever AUM Volleyball Invitational hosted by the Warhawks.
NOTES
• AUM improves to 2-2 on the season while LOC drops to 0-5.
• The two teams have now met in consecutive matches, with the Warhawks earning a 3-0 victory over the Magicians on Aug. 25.
• The 11 aces by the are the second most by the Warhawks in program history. AUM set the record with 12 against Tuskegee on Oct. 10, 2017.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Junior outside hitter
Sommer Rhea set career-highs with 12 kills and a .550 hitting percentage. Rhea committed just one attack error in the match.
• Freshman
Emily Ward set a career-high in digs with 11 and aces with four.
• Sophomore
Jaylyn Felder recorded a season-best four blocks (two solo).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The first set saw the Orange & Black run out to a 14-5 advantage capped off by a Rhea kill. The two teams traded points over the next few series before the Warhawks rallied for nine consecutive points to earn the 25-8 victory.
• Set No. 2 saw the Magicians jump out to an 8-3 advantage before the Warhawks rallied from behind to tie the game at 10-10 on a kill by
Nyah Whittlesey. AUM then rattled off 10 consecutive points before LOC's Jurnee Gibson notched a kill to end the streak. The Warhawks would then tally five straight points to win the set on a
Jaylyn Felder kill.
• In the third set the Magicians and Warhawks traded points back and forth in the early part of the frame before AUM was able to pull away fro a 20-9 advantage. The Magicians were able to hold off match point for three rallies but eventually Rhea put the finishing touches on the match with a kill to give the Warhawks the 25-13 set victory.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• AUM tallied 34 points to just 15 for the Magicians.
• AUM hit for a .352 clip while LOC hit for a -.068 percentage, committing 20 attack errors.
• The Warhawks tallied 32 digs while the Magicians tallied 25.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host Limestone and Tuskegee on Saturday, Sept. 1 at the AUM Gymnasium, playing the Saints at 8 a.m. before closing out the tournament with the Golden Tigers at 6 p.m.
