Strong Second Set Not Enough As Warhawks Fall To #15 UWF

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Despite a strong effort in the second set of Auburn Montgomery's match against #15 West Florida the Warhawks were not able to pull off the upset of the home-standing Argonauts, falling 3-0 (25-7, 27-25, 25-15) in Gulf South Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon.
 
NOTES
• AUM falls to 9-9 on the season with a 0-7 mark in the GSC.
• UWF improves to 14-4 and 6-1 in league play.
• The Warhawks are 0-2 against the Argos in program history.
• The two teams will close out the regular season with a match on Nov. 3 at the AUM Gymnasium.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Junior outside hitter Sommer Rhea tallied a team-high six kills for AUM.
• Sophomore libero Skylar Coppinger led the team in digs with eight.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Argonauts got off to a hot start in the first set, jumping out to an 11-4 lead. UWF then went on a 10-0 run before AUM was able to break serve. Eventually Caleigh Morrison would finish off the set with a kill to give UWF a 25-7 victory.
• The second set saw the Warhawks get their offense on track, trading points with UWF until AUM went up 10-8 on a kill by Carly Smart. The Argos would respond with a 5-0 run before the Orange & Black would get a pair of points to cut the UWF lead to 13-12. After UWF tallied two points of its own AUM went on a 5-0 run to take a 17-15 lead. The two teams would trade runs back and forth until UWF got to set point at 24-23. AUM would fight off a couple of set points by the Argos, but UWF would wind up taking the set 27-25.
• AUM jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set before eventually taking a 13-11 lead. UWF would answer with an 11-1 run to go up 22-14 before taking the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• The match featured 22 tie scores and 11 lead changes.
• Each team tallied 7.0 blocks.
 
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will host GSC opponent Shorter University on Friday, Oct. 5 at the AUM Gymnasium. The match is set to begin at 6 p.m. on the campus of the Warhawks.
