Mendez Scores Twice But Warhawks Fall in Overtime To Wingate 4-3

MONTGOMERY, Ala – The Auburn Montgomery women's soccer team dropped an overtime heartbreaker to Wingate University on Monday afternoon, falling 4-3 in overtime to the Bulldogs.

  • The Warhawks fall to 0-2 on the year.
  • Wingate improves to 2-0 on the season.
STANDOUT PERFROMERS
  • AUM forward Ruby Mendez recorded her second and third goal of the season while registering a game-high nine shots.
  • Colleen Zickert scored two goals including the game-winning goal in overtime for the Bulldogs.
  • Dejon Fletcher and Felicia Wester combined to stop 10 shots in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first 20 minutes of the game were played evenly between both sides, neither were able to break through on the scoreboard.
  • Mendez broke the scoreless tie in the 30th minute for AUM. Ariel Jones took the corner kick for the Warhawks and found the head of Mendez to put the team up 1-0.
  • Wingate would respond quickly when Zickert registered her first goal of the game just four minutes later. Zickert took a pass from Alicia Rubio Garcia and was all alone in front of the keeper and beat Fletcher short side.
  • The Bulldogs would also have the advantage coming out of the half, scoring in the 48th and 64th minute to extend the lead to two goals.
  • AUM brought the game back to just one goal in the 65th minute on a set piece goal from Mendez. Melissa Fernandez delivered the ball right on the head of Mendez who then slotted the ball into the net.
  • Four minutes later, Fernandez was on the ball for another free kick, this time finding the feet of Julia Simoes and assisted on her up her first career goal and tied the game at three.
  • Neither side were able to score before regulation time had ended, so the game was sent into overtime.
  • Zickert clinched the game for the Bulldogs with just 10 seconds left in the first overtime period capping off an overtime period where Wingate had the majority of the possession.

UP NEXT
The Warhawks will be back in action Friday, Sept. 14 when they will open up Gulf South Conference play against Valdosta State. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the AUM Soccer Complex.
