Mendez’s Hat Trick Leads Warhawks to 3-1 GSC Victory Over Spring Hill

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Led by a three-goal performance from junior forward Ruby Mendez, the Auburn Montgomery women's soccer team picked up a 3-1 Gulf South Conference victory over Spring Hill College on Sunday, Sept. 30.
 
Notes
- With the win, the Warhawks improve to 2-6 overall, and 2-4 in GSC play.
- The win over Spring Hill marks for AUM's fifth straight over the Badgers.
 
Standout Performers
- Mendez netted all three goals, for her first hat trick of the 2018 season. The San Jose, Calif. native now sits at 10 goals for the 2018 season. Mendez also took a team-high seven shots on the day.
- Fabiana Alborghetti, Stella Mazzillo and Tonie Sledz all accounted for an assist in the contest. 
- Mayson Jaindl and Alborghetti both also took a team-high seven shots on the afternoon. Jaindl posted a team-high six shots on goal, while Alborghetti had three on frame.
- In goal, Dejon Fletcher (2-3) went 3-4 on save opportunities on the day, en route to picking up her second win of the season.
 
How it Happened
- Neither team was able to get on the board in the first period, with the Warhawks outshooting the Badgers 10-6 through the first 45 minutes.
- AUM broke the scoreless tie in the 51st minute of the match, when Mazillo took advantage of a misplayed Spring Hill pass to help set up Mendez for her first score of the day. 
- The Warhawks would go on to double their lead in the 65th minute, on a corner kick from Sledz that was able to find the foot of Mendez for the goal.
- After a Spring Hill retaliation in the 67th minute to make the score 2-1, Mendez would deliver her third and final goal of the day to put AUM up 3-1 in the 69h minute. Alborghetti helped set up the score.
 
Inside the Boxscore
- AUM outshot Spring Hill 27-11 on the day, with 16 of the Warhawk's 27 shots coming on goal. 
- Of the Warhawks 27 shots, 17 came in the second period. 
- The Warhawks took seven corner kicks in the contest, compared to six for the Badgers.  
 
Up Next
- The Warhawks will return to action on Friday, Oct. 5 when they take on the West Alabama Tigers in Livingston, Ala. in GSC action. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
