MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Junior guard
Carlos Bell tied his career-high with 25 points for Auburn Montgomery against Union University on Tuesday evening, but the Warhawks could not contain the high-powered Bulldog offense, falling 95-79 in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action.
NOTES
• AUM falls to 5-10 on the season and 1-6 in league play.
• Union improves to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in the GSC.
• The Bulldogs sweep the season series with the Orange & Black, having earned a 95-74 victory at Union earlier this season.
• The Warhawks are now 1-5 lifetime against the Bulldogs.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Bell scored 25 to lead all players, connecting on 8-of-14 field goals and 8-of-9 free throw attempts. He also tallied three steals, two blocks and two assists. Tonight marked the third time this season that Bell has scored 25 points.
• Junior forward/center
Aaron Reddick tallied 17 points and seven rebounds, posting a block and a steal.
• Sophomore guard
Stanley Davis finished the night with 13 points, connecting on three 3-pointers for the Warhawks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Union ran out to a 9-2 lead over the first three minutes of the contest before AUM started to claw their way back into the game. With 11:14 to play in the first Reddick hit a contested jumper in the paint to give the Warhawks their first lead of the contest, 17-16. After a missed 3-pointer by the Bulldogs Reddick hit a put-back layup with 10:26 to go to put the Warhawks up 19-16.
• The Bulldogs' JC Clausi tied the game on their next possession with a trey and the game was knotted up at 19 points apiece with 10:13 to play. Davis would give AUM a 3-point lead when he hit a long distance 3-pointer to give his squad a 22-19 advantage but Clausi would answer right back, tying the game at 22-22 with another trey.
• Over the next seven minutes the Bulldogs would pull away from AUM, going on a 20-to-5 run to go up 42-27 with 2:27 left in the frame. The two teams would trade buckets the rest of the way, with Union taking a 48-34 lead into the break.
• AUM would start the second half on fire, going on an 8-0 run to pull to within 48-42 with 18:23 to play on a
Darrion Taylor fastbreak layup. After a pair of free throws by the Bulldogs layups by Reddick and
Kenneth Keith on AUM's next two possessions would cut the deficit to 50-46 with 16:13 to play.
• However, Union was able to regain the momentum in the contest by going on a 17-to-4 run over the next five minutes, taking a 67-50 lead on a Bryson Butler mid-range jumper with 11:52 to go.
• The Bulldogs would keep AUM at arm's length over the next six minutes, but Davis was able to convert an old fashioned 3-point play with 4:33 to go on a fastbreak layup where the sophomore was fouled going to the rim. With 4:33 to go the Warhawks were now down 80-70.
• Union would respond with a 3-pointer by Terrandus Smith moments later, halting AUM's comeback bid. The Bulldogs would outscore the Warhawks 15-to-9 over the final four and a half minutes to earn a 95-79 victory on the road.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• AUM committed on 12 turnovers while forcing 15 by the Bulldogs.
• Union won the rebounding battle, 35-32.
• The Bulldogs outscored AUM 44-34 in the paint.
• Union shot 56 percent from the floor while the Warhawks shot 42 percent.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will head to Rome, Ga., to take on GSC foe Shorter University in a contest set to tip off at 3 p.m. on the campus of the Hawks. The game will be the first of two meetings this season between the two squads.
