MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men's basketball team evened the season series with Auburn Montgomery on Saturday afternoon with a 63-47 victory over the visiting Warhawks in Gulf South Conference play, as the Falcons avenged a loss the AUM earlier this season.
NOTES
• AUM improves to 6-11 on the season and 2-7 in league play.
• Montevallo improves to 8-11 overall and 4-5 in the GSC.
• The victory for the Falcons avenges an 82-80 loss at AUM on Jan. 3.
• The Warhawks are now 30-26 lifetime against UM.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Sophomore guard
Stanley Davis tallied a team-high 15 points and six rebounds for the Orange & Black.
• Junior guard
Carlos Bell scored 10 points and pulled down four boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons jumped out to an 8-3 lead before Bell hit a trey to cut the deficit to 8-6 with 15:49 to go in the first. UM responded with a 7-0 run before junior forward
Aaron Reddick hit a layup with 10:47 on the clock to stop the run.
• The next seven minutes saw Montevallo take a 25-13 lead with 2:58 to play before another Bell 3-ball cut the deficit to nine. AUM could not cut into the UM advantage over the rest of the frame, entering halftime down 29-16.
• UM started the second half on a 15-3 run before a
Devorious Brown jumper cut the deficit to 44-21 with 12:46 to play. AUM would go on an 18-8 run over the next six minutes to cut UM lead to 52-39 with 5:45 to go, capped off by a Brown 3-pointer to get the Warhawks to within striking distance.
• However, the Falcons outscored the Warhawks 11-8 the rest of the way to secure the 63-47 victory.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
• Montevallo won the rebounding battle 50-30.
• UM outscored AUM 30-14 in points in the paint.
• Each team went to the free throw line 16 times, with AUM hitting 10 and UM hitting six.
• Both teams hit seven 3-pointers.
UP NEXT
The Warhawks will be back home next Saturday when they host GSC foe #21 Valdosta State at the AUM Gymnasium at 4 p.m. The game will be the culmination of AUM's 2019 Homecoming Week, as the Orange & Black will welcome the Blazers to campus as part of a doubleheader with the women's teams beginning at 2 p.m.
