Batistela’s Final-Minute Goal Gives Men’s Soccer 1-0 win over Montevallo

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- Junior midfielder Lucas Batistela booted home the game-winning goal with 38 seconds left in regulation to help give the Auburn Montgomery men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over the University of Montevallo on Tuesday, Oct. 22 in Gulf South Conference action.

NOTEWORTHY
- The win improves AUM's record to 7-3-2 on the season, and 4-0-2 in GSC play.
- The Warhawks current unbeaten streak improves to nine games with the win.
- The victory also slides the series advantage to the Orange and Black's side, as AUM's now holds an 8-7 program record in matches against the Falcons.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Batistela's 90th-minute game winner served as his second goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Rasheed Bolaji helped set up the score, marking for his first collegiate assist.
- Arnaud Baron and Renan Diniz both tallied a team-high four shots in the match, with Baron taking a shot on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard in the first half, with the Warhawks outshooting the Falcons, 6-1.
- The Warhawks put their foot on the gas in half number two, rattling off 13 shots with a handful of near misses.
- Moreland accounted for AUM's first real chance in the second, with a flush strike from outside the box in the 50th minute that was knocked away by the Montevallo keeper.
- The Warhawks would get a couple more decent looks within a two-minute span of each other, as a low-lining shot from Diniz would clank off the right post in the 77th minute, and a header by Wagner in the 79th minute would miss just high and wide.
- The eventual game-winner in minute number 90 started on a ball played by Bolaji to Batistela into the box, who would finish strong and into the back of the net to give AUM the final 1-0 advantage.

QUOTING THE COACH
"It was a lights-out performance by the boys tonight, and I thought they did very well from start to finish," Head Coach Matthew Thorne said. "Montevallo is a quality and well-coached team. Tonight was a battle, as most Gulf South Conference matches are. As the game went on, I felt like we started to take more control of the game. We were also much more solid defensively today; I was proud of how we worked as a unit. Overall, I'm pleased with the win. Right now, it's all about recovery and getting focused for Shorter on Friday for Senior Night."

- AUM finished just two shots off their season high, taking 19 on the night. Seven of the Warhawk's shots came on frame.
