Morales Posts Career Night In Loss To West Georgia

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Despite a career night from Victoria Morales, the Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team dropped the final game of the decade to Gulf South Conference foe West Georgia 83-76 on Saturday afternoon.

NOTES
- AUM falls to 6-5 on the year with an 0-4 mark in conference play.
- West Georgia improves to 9-2 in 2019, with a 2-1 record in GSC action.
- Morales posted a career high in points and rebounds.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
Victoria Morales led the Warhawks in every offensive category.
Jordan Brewster knocked down six 3-pointers.
Alexia Wallace tallied eight points, three rebounds and an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams had two possessions each before either side was able to get on the board in the first. Morales opened the scoring for the game two and a half minutes into the first when she hit a 3-pointer from deep to give AUM an early three-point lead. After West Georgia netted the next four points, Roni Richardson scored on her first touch of the game to retake a 5-4 lead. AUM would receive offensive contributions from three different players as Richardson, Jemaiya Lee, and Catlin Carter all got on the board to take a 12-8 lead. The referees may have forgotten their whistles in the locker room as the first foul was not called until the 2:43 mark of the first quarter, allowing Carter and Richardson to knock down four free throws. AUM closed out the quarter in commanding fashion and took a 21-13 lead heading into the second period.
- Jordan Brewster was doing Jordan Brewster things early in the second quarter as the sophomore hit back-to-back 3-pointers to extend AUM's lead to 27-13. Wallace made her first appearance into the game and immediately stormed down the court and hit a fast-break layup to push the Warhawk lead to 31-19. The Orange & Black took advantage of incredible rebounding and help West Georgia scoreless for over 90 seconds in the middle portions of the second quarter. Both the Wolves and the Warhawks struggled to find offensive consistency in the dying moments of the first half, which resulted in the Orange & Black taking a 42-29 lead into the halftime break.
- Unlike the first half, fouls were the story to begin the second. Morales went 1-2 from the charity stripe just seconds into the third quarter, meanwhile moments later UWG was awarded two free throws and knocked them both down. A 5-0 run from West Georgia cut the lead down to single digits and resulted in a nine-point Warhawk lead. Morales put the run to rest with a layup to regain an 11-point lead with just under seven minutes to play in the third period. West Georgia put on the pressure after the media timeout in the third, going on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to three. The Wolves ended the third quarter on a 20-4 run to take a 57-53 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
- The Wolves continued their offensive dominance into the fourth quarter, taking the first six points of the fourth frame to push their lead to 63-53. Carter broke the silence for the Orange & Black, knocking down two free throws to get on the board for the first time in the fourth. AUM worked their way back into the game after Morales converted on a three-point play and Carter hit a fast break 3-pointer to cut the lead to five at the time. After a West Georgia layup, Brewster hit her fourth triple of the game to cut the lead to three. After the media timeout, the Wolves ran the shot clock down to five before hitting a 3-pointer to take a 72-64 lead with four minutes to play. Despite multiple baskets in close from Morales, the Wolves continued to answer the Warhawks offensive efforts and led by 10 with 90 seconds to go in the game. Brewster did all she could to get her team back in the game when she hit back-to-back 3-pointers with under 30 seconds remaining to cut the lead to four, but the Wolves would come away with an 83-76 victory.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- The Warhawks shot 41.2% from the field today.
- AUM knocked down 10 free throws.
- Both teams tallied 37 rebounds.
- The Orange & Black missed just one free throw, going 10-11.

QUOTING THE COACH
"I thought we were the better team for three quarters of the game, but the third quarter really hurts. However, going into the Christmas break with a winning record (6-5) is a positive and shows the improvement of the program."
