Women’s Hoops Falls at Valdosta State in Season Finale, 64-50

VALDOSTA, Ga. --- The Auburn Montgomery women's basketball team closed out their 2018-19 season with a 64-50 loss to the Lady Blazers of Valdosta State University on Thursday, Feb. 28 in Gulf South Conference action. 
 
NOTES
- AUM finishes out their 2018-19 campaign 5-23 overall, and 4-16 in GSC play. 
- Senior forward Evelina Avleeva played in her last collegiate contest for AUM Thursday night. Avleeva finishes off her Warhawk career with 535 points, 395 rebounds, 98 assists and 107 steals.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Victoria Morales led AUM with a career-high 17 points, to go along with a rebound and a blocked shot.
- Aaliyah Milord tallied a season-high nine points in the game, while dishing out a season-high five assists and hauling in five rebounds.
- Jordan Brewster knocked down a pair of three's in the game, bringing her season three-point total to 106, a mark that ranks for the second most three's made in a single season in AUM women's basketball program history. 
- Avleeva led AUM with six rebounds in her final game for the Orange and Black, while also grabbing two steals, blocking a shot and scoring a point.
- Jessika Milton and Kendra Boone both grabbed five rebounds off of the AUM bench, with Milton accounting for nine points and Boone scoring six.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams struggled out of the gate on offense, with the score sitting 6-5 in favor of Valdosta State at the first media timeout of the game at the 4:41 mark in the first.
- A successful jumper by Morales at the 2:44 mark would bring the game to 9-7, but the Lady Blazers would score six of the quarter's final eight points to lead 15-9 at the end of the first. 
- Morales would notch the first points of the second quarter, knocking down a three-ball to cut AUM deficit to three points at 15-12 with 8:42 to go in the second. 
- Valdosta State would go on to rattle of an 8-1 run over the four and a half minutes, however, to lead 23-13 at the 4:15 mark in the second.
- The Lady Blazers would go up by 12 at 27-15 in the waning minutes of the half, but the Warhawks would rattle off a 5-0 run over the final two minutes of the quarter to cut their deficit to 27-20 at halftime. 
- The Lady Blazer notched the first basket of the second half to lead 29-20, but AUM would go for a quick 5-0 run to cut their deficit to just two possessions at 29-25 with 7:25 to go in the third.  
- Valdosta State would score the next eight points unanswered, however, to expand their lead back to double digits at 37-25 at the 2:43 mark in the third.
- The Lady Blazers would continue their offensive push, finishing the final eight minutes of the period on a 15-3 run to lead 44-27 through three quarters. 
- The Warhawks outscored the Lady Blazers 23-20 in the final period, including nine of the final 11 points of the game, to give way to the 64-50 final score.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- The Warhawks shot a season-high 45 percent (18-40) from the floor in the game, including 52 percent (10-19) on all field goals in the second half.
- AUM notched 14 assists in the game, their second-highest total of the season.
- The Warhawks shot 69 percent (9-13) from the charity stripe in the game. 
- Valdosta State won the rebounding battle, 31-26.
- The Warhawks got 17 points of contribution off of their bench, while scoring seven points off of Lady Blazer turnovers. 

QUOTING THE COACH
"We got beat by a very good team tonight, but we played hard," Head Coach Sean Page said. "It's a tough way to finish the season, but I think that we have shown improvement. Hopefully, we can learn from this season, and come back in 2019-20 ready to compete for a championship."
