Warhawks Walk-Off Game Two to Salvage Doubleheader Split with Montevallo

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- The Auburn Montgomery baseball team got a walk-off base hit from senior shortstop Jonathan Brandt in game number two of their Gulf South Conference doubleheader with the University of Montevallo on Saturday, March 2 to help claim a split in the twinbill with the Falcons. 
 
NOTES
- AUM dropped game one 14-9, and won 8-7 in game two.
- The Warhawk's record now sits at 10-8 overall, and 4-5 in GSC play. 
- AUM's all-time series advantage over Montevallo now sit at 37-32 after this weekend's action
 

GAME ONE
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
Sage Smelley drove in a team-high four runs in game one, in addition to logging two base hits.
- Quinterrious Arrington knocked a team-high three base hits in the game, while scoring a team-high three runs and swiping two bags.
- Dalton Cobb also picked up three base knocks, in addition to driving in and scoring two runs.
- Harrison Morris clubbed two base hits, while also driving in one. 
- Brandt scored twice in the contest, while also recording a base hit.
- Zach Feaster drove in one run on one hit, while Casey Henderson and Matthew Zielonko both scored a run, with Zielonko drawing a team-high three walks in the game.
- Ryan Burkett (0-1) took the loss for AUM in game one. The senior left-hander tossed 1.2 innings of relief, surrendering two unearned runs on three hits, while striking out a team-high three Falcon batters. 
- Connor Smith tossed a game-high two innings of relief out of the AUM bullpen, striking out two and giving up just two earned.
- Starter Micah Henderson lasted just 1.1 innings for AUM in game one, while Aaron Hill, Keegan Fairley and Josh Flowers all tossed one inning of relief for the Warhawks. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Montevallo drew first blood in game one, plating three runs in the first, with all three coming on a three-run shot. A leadoff hit by pitch to begin the game, followed by a one-out walk, would precede the homer.
- AUM would respond in their first at bat of the game, however, with a pair of runs on two hits. After reaching base via error with one away, Arrington would come around to score on a Cobb double down the left field line. Smelley would plate Cobb for AUM's second run of the inning two batters later, to cut the Warhawk's deficit to 3-2 after one. 
- After adding a run in the second to go up 4-2, the Falcons would pile on four runs in the fourth inning to go up 8-2. With the bases loaded and one away, the Falcons would see three runs come across on an AUM fielding error. A wild pitch with two away would provide UM's fourth run of the inning.
- With the score reading 9-3 heading into the fifth, the Warhawks would battle their way back into the game, putting up a four-spot in the bottom of the fifth to trail just 9-7.
- Inning number five for AUM began with a pair of singles from Arrington and Cobb, followed by a one-out walk by Zielonko to load the bases. Smelley would plate two runs one batter later, on a two-RBI knock to center field. Brandt reaching base via a fielder's choice, followed by an RBI-single to center by Feaster, would account for the remaining runs in the inning.
- AUM would go on to tie the game up in their next at-bat in the sixth, with an RBI single by Cobb through the left side and an RBI sac fly by Smelley providing for the damage in the inning. 
- The Falcons would retake the lead in their next at-bat in the top of the seventh, however, plating two runs on two hits, with AUM making a costly error to help keep the inning alive. 
- Montevallo would go on to plate two mores runs in the eighth, to give way to the 14-9 final.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- The Warhawks outhit the Falcons in the contest, 12-11.
- Both teams committed three errors, with AUM's three miscues leading to seven unearned runs and Montevallo's leading to four unearned runs.  
- AUM used a season-high six pitchers in game number one.
 

GAME TWO
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Brandt led AUM on offense in game number two, finishing with a team-high two hits and three runs driven in.
- Arrington also registered two hits, in addition to scoring three runs.
- Zielonko knocked in a pair of runs for the Orange and Black, while also scoring a run and picking up a hit.
- Cobb and Henderson both recorded a run scored and a hit, with Cobb scoring two runs and driving in a run.
- Aaron Hill added an RBI on one extra base hit.
- Hank Scott struck out five batters over a season-high six innings of work, while allowing four earned.
- Todd Burkett (2-0) picked up the win in relief. The senior right-hander recorded the final out of the seventh inning to set himself up for the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warhawks wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard in game number two, putting up two runs in the first via a Brandt sac fly, and a Zielonko two-RBI double down the left-field line to give AUM an early 3-0 advantage.
- After a scoreless second, the Warhawks went back to work in the third, this time plating four runs on four base hits. Arrington and Cobb got the third frame going with a pair of triples to lead off, followed by an RBI single by Brandt through the right side, a Montevallo throwing error and a Hill RBI double to left field to put AUM up 7-0 after three. 
- After scratching a run in both the fourth and sixth innings, the Falcons went into full rally mode in the seventh and final inning of the game. Montevallo would launch a two-run and three-run home run in the inning before making an out, to tie the game at seven-all. 
- After escaping the inning with the game tied, Arrington would lead off the bottom of the seventh for AUM with an infield single. Arrington would advance to second on a balk after the next two hitters were retired in order, setting the stage for Brandt's two-out walk-off hit to center field.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- The Wahawks were outhit by Montevallo, 12-8.
- AUM did not commit an error in game two. 
- The Orange and Black went 4-5 with runners in scoring position and less than two outs in the game, and got the leadoff hitter on base in four of seven innings. 
- The Warhawks left just three runners on base in the game, while the pitching staff stranded 11 Montevallo base runners.

- The Warhawks will return to action at Union University for a three-game Gulf South Conference series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m.
