Baseball Bested by Choctaws in Series Opener, 8-5

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- The Auburn Montgomery baseball team scored four runs over the final four innings of their Gulf South Conference series opener against Mississippi College, but it would not be enough, as they would drop the game 8-5 to the Choctaws on Friday, March 22.

NOTES
- With the loss, AUM's record drops to 14-13 overall, and 6-7 in GSC play.
- Friday's game served as the first meeting between the Warhawks and Choctaws.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Hayden Friesen knocked a pair of hits for the Warhawks, while also scoring a team-high two runs and driving in one. The junior utility man clubbed his first home run of the 2019 season in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- Jonathan Brandt and Casey Henderson both picked up a pair of hits and scored a run, with C. Henderson also accounting for an RBI in the setback.
- Quinterrious Arrington logged a team-high two runs driven in, while Matthew Zielonko, Zach Feaster and Dalton Cobb all added a hit in the contest.
- Josh Flowers (1-2) took the loss for the Warhawks on the mound. The senior right-hander allowed two earned over 3.1 innings of labor, while striking out three.
- Connor Smith tossed a team-high 3.1 relief innings for the Warhawks, while giving up just two runs.
- Harrison Morris and Hank Scott both tossed one inning out of scoreless relief out of the AUM bullpen, with Morris getting all three of his outs via the punch-out.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mississippi College struck first in the game, notching a run in each of their first two at-bats to grab an early 2-0 lead through two.
- After seeing the Choctaws plate a pair of runs in the fourth on a pair of RBI singles, AUM would finally scratch the scoreboard in inning number six. Arrington would bring home C. Henderson, who tripled to leadoff the frame, to plate Warhawk's first run of the game and trim their deficit to 4-1 through six innings of play.
- Both teams would add runs in the seventh, with the Choctaws scoring one and the Warhawks plating two. AUM started off the seventh with back-to-back singles from Brandt and Friesen, followed by an RBI-single to right field from C. Henderson to bring the score to 5-2. Arrington would bring home a run one batter later on a sacrifice bunt, to cut AUM's deficit to 5-3 after seven.
- After surrendering three runs to the Choctaws in the top of the eighth, the Warhawks would attempt to put a rally together in the bottom of the ninth. Friesen would lead off the inning with his first home run of the season to left center, followed by a single from Feaster, and a walk by C. Henderson. AUM would end up getting one more run in the inning on a Choctaw error, but the rally would fall short with the score reading 8-5.
