Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C. – The Auburn Montgomery volleyball team pushed its winning streak to four matches with a pair of victories at the 2019 USC Aiken Invitational on Friday, defeating Lander University 3-2 in a five-set thriller then earning a 3-0 victory over Barton College.
NOTES
- The Warhawks improve to 5-3 on the season with a 3-2 mark at home.
- AUM won the match with the Bearcats 26-24, 25-21, 24-26, 11-25, 15-11.
- AUM won the match with the Bulldogs 25-16, 25-21, 25-20.
- Lander falls to 4-1 on the season while Barton drops to 1-3.
QUOTING THE COACH
"We had great moments today during both matches, but we still need to learn many more lessons," said head coach
Flavia Siqueira. "Being ahead ahead 2-0 versus Lander and letting them back in the game showed our players that staying focused and fighting for every point is very important regardless of the score. Barton has two very consistent outside hitters. Our goal was to change our defense based on their tendencies and minimize our errors creating a game of more volume."
HOW IT HAPPENED (LANDER)
- The first set saw the two teams battle to a 10-10 tie. The two teams traded side outs back and forth until the teams were tied once again at 20-20 before the Bearcats went up 23-21. The Warhawks would score three straight points to reach set point at 24-23, but Lander would tie the set at 24 points apiece. A kill by
Sommer Rhea got the Warhawks to set point again then an attack error by Lander would give the Orange & Black the 26-24 win.
- AUM jumped out to a 5-1 lead capped off by a
Jaylyn Felder kill. Lander would break serve but the Warhawks would push its advantage to 11-5. The two teams traded points back and forth, with AUM holding on for the 25-21 victory.
- It was another back and forth affair in the third set battling to a 10-10 tie. AUM would go on a 5-2 run capped off by an
Isadora Nicolai kill to push its lead to 15-12 before eventually going up 19-16 on a Rhea kill. Lander would tie the match with a 3-0 run and then took the lead forcing an AUM timeout down 20-19. The Warhawks then retook the lead 23-21 before the Bearcats tied the match at 23-23. After points by both teams Lander was able to score the final two points to win the set 26-24.
- The fourth set saw the two teams battle to a 6-6 tie before the Bearcats went on a 12-2 run to take a commanding 18-8 lead. Lander would finish off the set 25-11 to tie the match at two sets apiece.
- AUM got their offense back on track in the fifth set, taking a 6-2 lead and forcing a Lander timeout. The Bearcats would claw their way back into the frame, going on a 5-2 run to cut the AUM lead the 8-7 which forced and AUM timeout. The Warhawks responded with another 5-2 run to go up 13-9 and force Lander to take its final timeout. The Orange & Black would get the final two points they needed to take the match, winning on a
Dariona Dash service ace to take the frame 15-11 and the match 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED (BARTON)
- The Warhawks jumped out to a 6-2 lead before the two teams traded points and the Bulldogs cut the lead to 10-9. AUM rattled off four straight points beginning with a
Jaylyn Felder kill, going up 19-11. The Orange & Black would hold the Bulldogs at bay to go up 1-0 with a 25-16 victory.
- Barton took the early advantage in the second set, going up 4-1 before a
Dariona Dash kill broke the serve. The Bulldogs then pushed their advantage to 11-5 with
Carla Butler breaking the serve with a kill from the back line. A 6-1 run by the Warhawks tied the set at 12-12. The teams would trade serves back and forth before AUM would reel off three straight points to take a 21-17 advantage. Both teams would score four points apiece the rest of the way, with the Warhawks earning the 25-21 victory.
- AUM ran out to a 6-1 lead in the third set before the Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 6-6. Three straight points by the Warhawks put them up 9-6 prior to the two teams trading points back and forth. Barton would cut the AUM lead to 17-16 before a 3-0 run by the Warhawks gave them a 20-16 lead. AUM would hold the Bulldogs at bay the rest of the way to win the frame 25-20 and the match 3-0.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE (BARTON)
- AUM hit for a .224 clip while the Bulldogs hit .100 in the match.
- The Warhawks tallied 40 kills in the match while Barton tallied 31.
- Barton collected 4.0 blocks while AUM notched 2.0.
