HOW IT HAPPENED
- Montevallo had everything working for them in the first quarter of action as they jumped out to an 18-2 lead to begin the contest. The Falcons secured the game's first eight points before Brewster put an end to the 8-0 run. Montevallo would add 10 more unanswered points at the Warhawks' expense to grab the big lead with three minutes left in the first. The Orange & Black were able to get some 3-pointers to fall as both Brewster and Victoria Morales hit triples to cut into the Falcon lead. Catlin Carter scored the quarter's last seven points to run the game to 21-15 at the end of the first period.
- It took both teams two minutes to score a basket to start the second quarter. The scoreless streak was broken by a Montevallo free-throw, but the shot was quickly answered by back-to-back 3-pointers from Brewster to cut the Falcons' lead to one. Two foul shots brought the Montevallo lead back to three and it would spark three more minutes of scoreless basketball between the two rivals. The scoring picked back up with a 3-pointer from Montevallo's Paige Ward, only to be answered by a Lee layup and a free throw from Makaylla Bullard. The programs traded baskets to end the first half and Montevallo took a 31-29 heading into the halftime break.
- Montevallo scored the first three points of the second half on a layup and one free throw, but the Orange & Black tallied nine-straight points from Lee, Morales and Carter to take their first lead of the night at 38-34. The AUM lead would be extended to five points when Brewster hit a 3-pointer to run the score to 41-36. Her shot at the 5:15 mark of the third quarter would not be answered until Montevallo's Aaliyah Rice knocked down a layup with 2:42 remaining in the third to cut the Warhawks' lead to three. Carter and Alexia Wallace registered layups to close out the third period, but Montevallo answered with baskets of their own to tie the game at 45 going into the final frame.
- The Falcons took an early lead 48 seconds into the fourth quarter with a shot in the paint, but Brewster had her 3-point shot going again, hitting a shot from downtown to help AUM take a 48-47 lead. Four consecutive points from Montevallo were once again matched by a Brewster triple, trimming the Falcons' lead to one for the second-straight occasion. Brewster secured her team's ninth straight bucket with a 3-pointer to once again tie the game at 54, then followed up that shot with yet another 3-pointer right before the media timeout to propel AUM to a 57-56 lead with 4:14 remaining. The back-and-forth contest would continue late into the fourth quarter, resulting in a tie game with 1:37 remaining. Rice would break the tie with a free-throw, and it would be the last time any side registered a point until two more free throws from Montevallo with 20 seconds left on the clock. The Falcons added two more foul shots to eventually come away with a 64-59 win, and a season-series split with the Warhawks.

QUOTING THE COACH
"It's hard to win against a quality team when you start out down 18-2. I was proud of the fight and the fact that we had chances to win but unfortunately we did not execute well enough at either end down the stretch to get the win."

UP NEXT
Women's hoops will return to action and will go back on the road with a GSC game against the West Florida Argonauts on Thursday, Jan. 23. The game from Pensacola, Fla., is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
