Men’s Basketball Faces Road Tests at West Florida and Valdosta State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- The Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team will take to the road this week for a pair of Gulf South Conference contests at West Florida on Thursday, Jan. 23 and at Valdosta State on Saturday, Jan. 25.

ABOUT THE WARHAWKS
AUM heads into the week winners of their last two contests, including an improbable 74-71 comeback win over the University of Montevallo in Gulf South Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 18. Led by a 29-point, 10-rebound effort from junior forward Maharrith Jackson, the Warhawks erased a 29-point deficit to come back and secure a GSC win over the Falcons. 
 
Jackson's career day in the Warhawks' come-from-behind win over Montevallo rightfully earned him GSC Co-Player of the Week Honors, marking for the first AUM men's basketball player to earn a weekly honor from the conference since becoming a full-fledged member. 
 
The Warhawks' 76.3 points-per-game rate currently ranks fifth in the GSC and is spearheaded by four players averaging in double figures. Darrion Taylor's 14.5 points per game lead AUM, while Carlos Bell (14.1), Jackson (11.6) and Stanley Davis all bring with them a double-digit scoring average into the week. 
 
AUM remains among the top three-point shooting schools in the conference, ranking third in three-point percentage at just under 36 percent. D. Taylor and Davis both have knocked down a team-best 41 treys, a mark that ranks them tied for eighth in the GSC.
 
D. Taylor possesses the sixth-best field goal percentage in the GSC at 51 percent, while his 2.8 assist/turnover ratio comes in as the third-best margin in the Gulf South. The senior guard also ranks eighth in the GSC in total assists, (62) ninth in assists per game (3.6) and fifth in both steals (28) and steals per game (1.6). 
 
In the rebounding department, Jackson's 6.5 boards per game lead AUM. Aaron Reddick (5.8) and Bell (5.5) both are currently averaging over five rebounds a game. 
 
The Warhawks bring with them a 5-8 series record into their matchup with West Florida, and a mark of 3-6 into their meeting with Valdosta State. 
 
ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS
West Florida comes into their clash with AUM riding a four-game winning streak, all which have come against Gulf South teams. The Argos knocked off West Georgia 67-53 in Carrollton, Ga. their last time out on Saturday, Jan. 18.
 
The Argo's defense ranks among the third-stingiest in the conference, allowing opponents to score just 65.6 points per game. UWF has not allowed its opponent to score 70 points in their last five games.
 
Sophomore guard Jon Brown's 19.9 points per game leads the Argo attack and ranks second among all GSC players. Brown also leads UWF and ranks 10th in the GSC with a seven rebounds-per-game average. 
 
ABOUT THE BLAZERS
Valdosta State has won their last seven contests, including a 92-79 win at Shorter their last time out on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Blazers currently sit in second place in the GSC standings, while garnering a number 21 national ranking and a number three ranking in the south region.
 
The Blazers lead the GSC and rank 12th nationally in scoring offense, with an average of 89.4 points per game coming into the week. VSU additionally leads the conference in rebounds per game (41.2), turnover margin per game (4.12), turnovers forced per game, (15.9) assist/turnover ratio (1.35) and steals per game (8.71). 
 
Five different Blazers currently hold a double-digit scoring average, with three players averaging at least 15 points for VSU. Bryce Smith (15.6 PPG), Clay Guillozet (15.4 PPG) and Darrell Jones (15.3 PPG) rank 9-11th in the conference in scoring average, while Imoras Agee (11.1 PPG) and Cam Hamilton (10.1 PPG) all possess a double-digit point-per-game tally.
 
Jones and Guillozet rank fourth and fifth in the conference in rebounds per game, respectively, with Jones averaging 8.6 and Guillozet averaging 8.2.
