West Florida Pulls Ahead Late, Downs Warhawks To Split Season Series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In a tightly contested Gulf South Conference affair, the Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team fell to West Florida at home on Thursday night 58-53.

NOTES
- AUM falls back to .500 with a 10-10 record while their conference mark sits at 3-9.   
- UWF brings their record to 6-15 overall, with a 2-11 GSC record.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Victoria Morales nets her third 20-point game.
- Morales led the way in rebounds with seven. Jemaiya Lee and Makaylla Bullard also tallied six boards.
- Catlin Carter helped on a team-high three scores.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Morales converted on the Warhawks' initial possession of the game, going up and under an Argo defender to crack the scoreboard for the first time. Lee came down the floor after stopping the West Florida offense and converted an easy bucket inside the paint. Morales continued her hot shooting by hitting her first 3-pointer of the night to extend the Warhawk run to 7-0. West Florida finally got on the board at the 7:20 mark of the first quarter to end the AUM run at seven. West Florida broke a scoreless streak of three minutes with a 3-pointer to cut the AUM lead to 9-5. The Argos were able to bring the AUM lead to two before the first media timeout after a quick 4-0 run. A 9-0 run gave West Florida their first lead, but Lee was able to convert on a basket down low to tie the game at 11. The end of the first quarter saw the Warhawks take a 13-11 lead into the second quarter.
- UWF netted the first two scores of the second quarter on a mid-range jump shot to give West Florida another lead. An 8-0 Argos run was put to rest by a Carter 3-pointer to cut the UWF lead to 20-16. Aaliyah Milord was able to bring back the Warhawks into striking distance with a pair of jumpers to cut the West Florida lead to six with 3:30 to go in the first half. A minute and a half scoreless streak by both teams was broke by a Jordan Brewster floater to run the score to 26-22 in favor of UWF. The Tennessee native was able to follow up the layup with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to one. West Florida converted a pair of free throws before the end of the half and it resulted in a 28-25 Argo lead at the break.
- Like the second quarter, West Florida was able to net the first points of the quarter with a mid-range jumper to push their lead to 30-25. A shot in traffic went for the Argos to run the game to 32-25, but Morales was able to tally a 3-pointer to cut into the UWF lead. Morales was able to connect from downtown again in the early going, cutting the Argo lead to one and forcing a West Florida timeout. The Argos used their timeout to their advantage, taking the next seven points before Milord brought the game back to 39-33 with 3:30 remaining in the third. An 11-2 run to end the quarter saw West Florida up 41-33 heading into the fourth.
- Morales' stellar night from deep continued to start the fourth period, connecting on a 3-pointer for the Warhawks first points of the frame. The Argos were able to connect on three-straight possessions to maintain their 46-38 grip on the Orange & Black. Carter was able to keep the Warhawks close early in the fourth on a 3-pointer to cut the score to 46-41. Two free throws from Lee brought the Warhawks to within three for the first time in the second half but an Argo layup prolonged a potential AUM comeback. The under-five timeout saw West Florida sporting a 50-43 lead after a pair of baskets. The Warhawks were able to get control of the game after a quick 4-0 run to force a UWF timeout and cut the lead to three. With AUM trailing by five, Bullard was able to net a layup with less than a minute to go to cut the lead back to three. The Argos were able to hit a clutch 3-pointer with 28.5 seconds remaining in the fourth. Morales was able to bring the game to within four with 16.5 seconds after the Argo 3-pointer, but West Florida would come away with their second conference win of the season, besting the Orange & Black 58-53.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- AUM shot 20-61 from the field, good for 32.8%.
- The Orange & Black totaled seven 3-pointers.
- The Warhawks knocked down all six free throws.
- West Florida out-rebounded AUM 50-35.

UP NEXT
The Warhawks will make the long trip east to face Delta State in a Gulf South Conference showdown. This will be the first meeting of the year between the two schools.
