Men’s Basketball Drops Double-OT Heartbreaker at Delta State, 97-88

CLEVELAND, Miss. --- In a game that featured 25 lead changes,10 tied scored and needed two overtime periods to determine a winner, the Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team came out on the wrong end of a 97-88 contest at Delta State on Saturday, Feb. 1 in Gulf South Conference play. 
 
With the loss, AUM's record falls to 10-11 overall, and 5-8 in GSC action.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Maharrith Jackson led the Warhawks in scoring with 25 points on a 10-15 shooting day. Jackson also pulled in eight rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists. 
- Stanley Davis and Carlos Bell both scored 14 points, with Davis hauling in five rebounds and Bell grabbing four.
- Aaron Reddick matched a career-high with 13 rebounds in the loss, while also scoring eight points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams tallied 10 points each over the first five and a half minutes of game time, with a DSU three knotting the score up at 10-all at the 14:38 mark.
- The Statesmen outscored the Warhawks 18-7 over the next six minutes and change to take an 11-point lead at 28-17 with 8:13 to go until halftime. 
- DSU would go on to lead by as many as 14 in the period and would take a 42-30 lead into the break.
- The Statesmen stayed ahead of AUM by double-digits until the 15:23 mark, when the Warhawks would begin to battle their way back into the game. A pair of threes by Darrion Taylor and Joshua Moore on back-to-back possessions would cut AUM's deficit to just six points at 52-46 with 14:55 to play. 
- Trailing 54-46 with 14:24 to go, the Warhawks would rattle off a 10-1 run over the next four and a half minutes, as a layup from Bell would put AUM up 56-55 with 9:58 left. 
- Leads would swap 14 more times over the next five-plus minutes, with the final lead change coming on a Jeremiah Bozeman three to put AUM 72-71 with 4:25 left in regulation. 
- After a Davis layup with 2:54 left to put AUM up 74-71, both teams would hit a lull in offensive production for the game's final minutes. 
- With the score reading 74-73 in AUM's favor with 1:55 left, the Statesmen missed a pair of jumpers on back-to-back possessions that would have given them the lead. 
- D. Taylor was sent to the free-throw line after the most recent Delta State miss with 24 seconds left and hit just one of two shots to make the score 75-73. The Statesmen knocked down a game-tying bucket with just eight seconds left on the ensuing possession, while the Warhawks would miss a buzzer-beater to see the game go into overtime. 
- The Warhawks scored the first four points of OT period number one, but Delta State came storming back to make it 81-all with 1:06 left. 
- Each team would score two more points, as a Delta State buzzer-beater would come up short to force another OT.
- The Statesmen scored the first seven points of OT period number two and used that momentum to finish off the Warhawks in the second overtime.
 
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- The Warhawks shot 37 percent (10-27) in the first half, 56 percent (17-30) in the second, 50 percent (3-6) in the first overtime and just 28 percent (2-7) in the second OT to finish the game at 45 percent (32-70).
- Points in the paint played a pivotal role for both offenses, with AUM scoring 38 down low and DSU notching 48.
- Despite the losing effort, the Warhawks out-rebounded the Statesmen, 44-39.  
- AUM relied heavily on the three-pointer in the second half to get them back into the game, as they shot 62 percent (5-8) from downtown in the final 20 minutes of regulation. 
- The Orange and Black additionally tallied 30 bench points and 20 second-chance points.

- The Warhawks will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 8 when they host Mississippi College in GSC play at 4:00 p.m
