Goble Shines In Debut, Warhawks Split Gulf Shores Invitational

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team opened its historic 2020 season with a 9-0 win over Tuskegee and a 2-0 loss to No. 16 North Georgia on Saturday at the Gulf Shores Invitational.

NOTES
- AUM secured its first official NCAA DII victory
- The Warhawks have now won three-straight opening games
- Freshman Alanna Goble notched 10 strikeouts over 5.1 innings pitched against North Georgia
- Senior Parker Pinholster tallied her 99th career stolen base.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS GAME 1
- Olivia Aycock tied her own school record for stolen bases in a game with three.
- Hannah Dailey tanked her first home run of the season with a two-run blast.
- Bailie Barnes totaled three innings of scoreless ball in her AUM debut.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
- The Warhawks wasted no time in the first game of the season against the Golden Tigers, thanks to an Abby Krueger sacrifice fly that scored Aycock. The following Warhawk Jaycie Walker began her season with an RBI triple that scored transfer outfielder Allie Miller from third base.
- With two AUM runners in scoring position and a 2-0 lead, Kendall Tucker raced a ball through the left side of the infield to score Caroline Burns and Dailey to run the AUM lead to 4-0.
- Barnes was stellar in her Orange & Black debut, allowing just one hit in the bottom of the second which was quickly erased when the Tuskegee hitter tried to stretch a single into a double, but was promptly throw out by Miller at second base.
- The Warhawks made it three-consecutive innings with a run when Dailey came to the plate with a runner at first base. Dailey would then deposit the ball over the left fielder's head for her first home run of the season to stretch the AUM lead to 8-0.
- Morgan Duschell made sure she would not be left out of the hit parade with an RBI groundout that scored Pinholster from third base.
- Barnes, Cydney Sizemore and Molly Cobb combined to throw a five-inning shutout, allowing the Golden Tigers to reach base twice in the game as the Warhawks defeated Tuskegee 9-0 for AUM's first NCAA win.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE GAME 1
- Barnes, Sizemore and Cobb tallied two strikeouts in the contest.
- The Warhawks were issued seven free passes.
- AUM left six runners on base, while Tuskegee left two runners on.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS GAME 2
- Aycock and Duschell were the only two Warhawks to gain a hit.
- Goble finished her night going 5.1 innings pitched with 10 strikeouts and two hits allowed.

HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
- The rematch of last season's 9-0 AUM win over No. 3 ranked North Georgia was nothing short of a hitter's worst nightmare. The game saw just four total hits split between both teams and a game that ended with a 2-0 score.
- Goble struck out six of the first nine batters she faced to begin her career wearing the Orange & Black. It wasn't until the fourth inning that Goble surrendered her first hit of the evening.
- North Georgia was able to use a stolen base and a Krueger throwing error to score the game's first run on a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. Just like Goble, North Georgia's Kylee Smith was rolling through the opposing team's lineup.
- She was able to get some insurance in the top of the sixth when Kaylyn Anthony knocked Goble out of the game with a solo homerun over the head of Miller to double the Nighthawks' lead.
- AUM's final baserunner of the night came in the bottom of the fifth when Duschell pushed a single up the middle. However, the Warhawks were unable to bring across the tying run, resulting in a 2-0 North Georgia win.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE GAME 2
- North Georgia was offered two walks, while AUM drew one.
- Goble and Chanel Newcomer registered eight strikeouts.

QUOTING THE COACH
"For day one, it's a success.," said head coach Eric Newell. "Obviously, you never want to go 1-1 but North Georgia is one of the best in the country. We didn't get the timely hits, they did and we're disappointed. We took care of business against Tuskegee and against North Georgia, I really envision them as a top-10 team. I saw a lot of positives, we will continue to get better and we will continue to work and get ready for next weekend."

UP NEXT
The Warhawks will return to action when they travel to Milledgeville, Ga., to participate in the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Georgia College. AUM will play two games against Georgia College and Coker on Feb. 8 and 9.
