MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Despite a two home run day from
Molly Cobb, the Auburn University at Montgomery softball team dropped a home Gulf South Conference game to No. 25 Valdosta State 8-6.
NOTES
- After two weekends of GSC action, the Warhawks are 3-3 in GSC play with an 8-4 record overall.
- Valdosta State improves to 10-4 with a 5-1 GSC mark.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- Cobb tattooed two home runs in the series finale.
-
Maddie Parks gained her first career start and went 2-3 in the game.
-
Cydney Sizemore registered a scoreless seventh inning in relief.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Orange & Black made sure that they would not let scoring opportunities pass by without capitalizing, as in the first inning, Cobb lifted a ball into deep center that scored
Olivia Aycock and the game's first run.
-
Allie Miller's strength and speed aided the Warhawks in scoring the second run of the game. Miller hit a ball back to the pitcher, but the sophomore was able to muscle her way into the first basemen to delay a throw home, allowing
Lauren Haskins to score.
- Valdosta State got on the board for the first time in the third inning after Haskins overthrew
Kendall Tucker covering first base, allowing the run to score from second on a bunt attempt.
- Cobb made sure to get the run back for starter
Alanna Goble, as the freshman pounded a ball over the center field wall to run the AUM lead to 3-1.
- Goble ran into trouble in the fourth inning as Valdosta State's Lauren Hill connected a ball that she sent over the left field wall. A few batters later, the Lady Blazers had two runners in scoring position and brought one of them home on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at three.
-
Gracie Poe was called upon to pinch hit for the Orange & Black with two runners on and two outs. Poe was able to lift a ball over the second basemen's head, scoring
Tatiana Ervin and scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth.
- With
Chanel Newcomer in the circle, Valdosta State used two home runs in the sixth to take their first lead of the game. Joanna Muldoon launched a pinch-hit two-run home run to give VSU a lead and more insurance came batters later when Jordenne Gaten connected on a three-run shot to give the Lady Blazers an 8-4 lead.
- The Warhawks, however, would not go down without a fight as the Orange & Black were able to get two runners on and no outs in the seventh. Valdosta State quickly squandered the initial threat with a double play ball that left one runner on second base.
- Cobb came into the right-hand batter's box and majestically launched a ball toward right center field, clearing the wall and giving the Warhawks a chance in the seventh.
- With the tying run at the plate, Tucker was unable to extend the game as she popped up to the second basemen with Miller on first base.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Goble, Newcomer and Sizemore combined to strike out eight Lady Blazers.
- Only three walks were issued in the game, one belonging to Goble, the other two were Newcomer's.
- Both teams left four runners on base.
