MONTGOMERY, Ala. –The Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team tallied a season-high 89 points on a season-best 58 percent shooting performance and led from start to finish in their 89-75 victory over Montevallo on Saturday, Jan. 30, avenging a loss to the Falcons one night earlier.
With the win, AUM improves to 2-4 on the year while handing Montevallo their first loss of the season to bring their record to 3-1.
Four Warhawks scored in double figures, including a pair of 20-point performances from
Maharrith Jackson (23) and
Stanley Davis (20). Davis, who tallied 24 points Friday evening, logged his first double-double as a Warhawk with a career-high 11 rebounds. Jackson finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards on the day, in addition to dishing out a career-high five assists.
Sam Youngblood knocked down four of five three-pointers in the game, finishing with 16 points.
James Graham added 14 points in 20 valuable minutes off the AUM bench, while hauling in eight rebounds.
Both teams traded baskets over the first four minutes, with the score reading 10-8 in AUM's favor at the 16:05 mark in the first.
AUM would then go on to knock down eight of their next 12 shots as part of 20-5 run over the next seven minutes to climb out to a 30-13 lead at the 8:46 mark. Youngblood and Graham would both contribute six points over that span.
The Warhawks would continue their offensive efficiency for the remainder of the half, going 7-12 over the final eight minutes and outscoring Montevallo 17-16 to lead 47-29 at intermission. AUM finished half number one 61 percent (19-31) from the floor and 53 percent (7-13) from the three-point line
AUM expanded their lead over the first five minutes of the second half with a 10-4 run to go up 57-33 at the 15:15 mark.
After taking their largest lead of the game (67-41) on a layup from Jackson at the 10:21 mark, the Falcons would begin to chip away at the AUM lead over the next seven minutes with a 24-10 run and eventually trail just 77-65 with 2:45 to go.
The Warhawks got things back into gear on offense over the games final two minutes and change, however, by outscoring the Falcons 12-10 and sinking 10 free throws to help ice the contest.
AUM relied on key low-post play throughout the day, out-rebounding Montevallo 45-28 and cashing in on 14 second chance points. The Warhawks accounted for 38 total points in the paint.
Three-point shooting also proved to be an x-factor, with the Warhawks knocking down a season-high 11 threes and holding the Falcons to just six treys on 22 attempts (22.2 percent)
The Warhawks will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 3 when they host #24 Lee University from the AUM Gymnasium. Game time is slated for 6:00 p.m.
