Warhawks Temper Lady Flames For Third Straight Win

CLEVELAND, TN. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team put on a dominant showing against Gulf South Conference foe Lee on
Saturday afternoon, defeating the Lady Flames 3-1 on the road.

The Warhawks reach three straight wins for the first time since the start of the season and now stand at 14-8 on the year with a 6-3 GSC record. Lee, meanwhile, falls to 5-12 with a 3-6 Gulf South record.

Italian Giada Pais-Marden led the Warhawks in kills with 14 in the contest, while Maria Nicolau and Keren Santana also eclipsed the 10-kill mark with 13 and 11 kills each. Isadora Nicolai landed 21 assists and now sits at 2,920 career assists.

The first set did not feature a lot of competition for the Warhawks as they were in control from the first serve. A Santana kill cemented an epic start to the match as AUM led 13-2 early in the first. Nicolau would register one of her 13 kills to run the score to 19-5, and AUM ran away with the set by the score of 25-10.

Set two was played much closer than the first. A Ylenia De Mango ace stretched a modest AUM lead to 7-5 before Lee would come back to tie the set at seven. In the middle stages of the second set, AUM was able to gain a 15-11 lead. The Lady Flames would cut the lead to 17-14, but the Warhawks ended the second set on an 8-0 run to win 25-14.

AUM carried their momentum into the third set and got off to a commanding start in the third frame. AUM jumped out to an 8-2 lead. With the Lady Flames trailing 11-6, they shot back with an 8-0 run to take a 13-11 lead. Santana would later cut the deficit to 21-23, but Lee would come away with a 25-22 set three win.

Lee, trailing 5-3 early in the fourth set, rallied to take a one-point lead at 6-5. After that run, AUM responded with a 9-0 run that was capped off with a Santana ace. AUM ended the set with a 6-0 run to cement their third consecutive victory, taking the fourth set 25-12 and the match 3-1.

The Warhawks will travel to Winter Haven, Fla., to participate in the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference Crossover. The Warhawks will play three games over the span of two days from October 22-23. The opponents and times are to be determined.
