HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery men's soccer team put a bow on their perfect 2-0 weekend road trip with a 3-0 Gulf South Conference victory at Alabama Huntsville on Sunday, Oct. 17.
The win marks for the Warhawks' third in a row and fourth in their last five contests, bringing their record to 8-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in league play. AUM currently sits atop the GSC with 19 conference points earned on the season.
AUM took advantage of quality set-piece play for the game's first two goals, which were both set up by
Glenn Waters. The Warhawks' first goal was knocked in by
Jamos Hauk in minute number 42, followed by a 64th-minute corner kick goal from
Andrew Elkins to put AUM up 2-0.
Franck Kouentchi booted in the final goal for AUM in minute number 89, after a pass from
Landon Surratt led him into the box where he'd finish beautifully into the top shelf to make it 3-0.
Both teams took seven shots on the day, with the Warhawks topping the Chargers in shots on goal 5-2.
In goal,
Alexander Kraus (8-2-1) recorded a pair of saves on the way to collecting his GSC-best fifth clean sheet of the season. The completion of Sunday's contest additionally sees the senior keeper leading the Gulf South in goals against average (0.618) and save percentage (83 percent).
"I'm delighted with the lads again today with being able to come out victorious in another serious scrap against a quality side," Head Coach
Matthew Thorne said. "It was a game of two halves. First half UAH was on top of us but we took our chance late to make it 1-0. In the second half, I felt we were solid defensively and scored two great goals to put the game to bed. It was a great overall team weekend. Six points on the road in the GSC is extremely hard to do. Now we focus on Shorter on Friday."
The men's soccer team will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 22 when they take on Shorter University in a GSC road contest. Match time from Rome, Ga. is set for 6:30 p.m. (CST).
