MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery men's soccer team took part in its fourth-consecutive overtime contest on Friday, Oct. 8, falling 1-0 in heartbreaking fashion to Gulf South Conference foe West Florida.
The loss drops AUM's record to 5-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in GSC action.
The Argos game-winner came in minute number 94 of the contest, on a high-arching lob shot from Bernando Torres that just cleared the outstretched arms of
Alexander Kraus to find the back of the net.
The Warhawks and Argos both took ten shots on the night, with AUM logging just one shot on goal and UWF registering four.
The Warhawks saw multiple opportunities to score in the game, with none better coming on a penalty kick in minute number 28 from
Renan Diniz that missed just over the crossbar.
In goal, Kraus notched three saves. The senior keeper's record now sits at 5-2-1 on the year.
"West Florida is a fantastic side, and tonight was a very back-and-forth battle," Head Coach
Matthew Thorne said. "We had some very good chances in open play that we felt if we took them, we could have moved on and won the game. Credit to West Florida for fighting all the way, though. Every game in the GSC is a battle, and tonight was just another example of that. I thought we had the better the first half, and they had the better in the second. We had our chances to put it away and didn't, and they took advantage of their chance in OT. We've just got to dust ourselves off and get re-focused for a very tough Spring Hill team on Sunday."
The men's soccer team will return to play on Sunday, Oct. 10 with a home GSC tilt against Spring Hill College at 3:30 p.m. (CST).
