MOBILE, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team fell to NCAA DI foe South Alabama on the road on Monday night 70-49 to close out their 2021-22 exhibition schedule.
The Warhawks will now turn their attention to the season-opener on Thursday night against Lemoyne-Owen. The Jaguars, meanwhile, bring their record to 2-1 after a win against AUM.
Both
Demaurea Moore and
Jamya Tyus were great against their Sun Belt Conference foes. Moore finished the game with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Tyus led the offense with 13 points and six boards.
AUM jumped on South Alabama early in the first quarter. Points from
Catlin Carter,
Kailyn Farrell, and Tyus helped the Warhawks race out to an early 10-2 lead. A 3-pointer from
Jordan Brewster extended AUM's lead to their biggest of the day at 13-4, but South Alabama closed the first quarter out strong and would lead the Orange & Black 14-13 after the first frame.
More offensive excellence from Tyus kept the Warhawks close to begin the second quarter, but a quick run from the Jags saw the Warhawks fall behind 30-19. Some late points from Carter and Tyus kept AUM close at halftime as the Warhawks trailed 33-23 at the break.
Post-play and action in the paint gave the Warhawks some offensive firepower to begin the second half. Four points by Moore in the paint put the score back inside single digits for the Warhawks. South Alabama found their offensive groove at the end of the third quarter, taking five-straight points to lead 53-40 after three quarters of action.
Points from Farrell and Tyus to start the fourth quarter were not enough to jumpstart the Warhawk offense as the South Alabama attack was relentless and forced the Orange & Black to finish the game 0-5 from the field and eventually into a 70-49 defeat.
The Warhawks will now look ahead to the regular-season opener on the road on Thursday night against Lemoyne-Owen. The contest against the Lady Magicians is scheduled to begin at 5:30 in Memphis, Tennessee.
