Volleyball’s Postseason Run Ends In First Round

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Auburn University at Montgomery volleyball team saw its season come to an end in the first round of the Gulf South Conference tournament to eighth-seeded Mississippi College on Friday afternoon by a score of 3-1.

AUM's 2021 record finishes at 17-14 with an 8-6 record inside Gulf South Conference action. The Warhawks recorded four home wins, six road wins, and seven victories in neutral venues.

The Warhawks were led offensively in the first round by senior Nyah Whittlesey and junior Keren Santana. Both outside hitters recorded 11 kills for the team lead. The two-headed attack of Isadora Nicolai and Amber Bretwisch combined for 42 assists in the contest.

Mississippi College was in full control to start the playoff match. The Lady Choctaws pulled way ahead of AUM to begin the first set, taking a commanding 18-8 lead over the Orange & Black. Nothing the Warhawks could do on offense seemed to have any effect as AUM dropped the first set 25-13.

It was more of the same for Mississippi College to being the second set, as the Choctaws jumped out to an early 7-4 lead. The Warhawks, however, were able to mount a comeback, bringing the deficit to one point. AUM would hang around with MC for the majority of the set, but the Choctaws would take a tightly contested set 25-22.

The Warhawks would not go down without a fight in the third set. AUM was able to gain momentum in the third set, jumping out to a 10-6 lead on a kill from Carla Butler. Mississippi College would eventually take a 21-20 lead after a run of five-straight points, but AUM rebounded and took the third set, 26-24, to stay alive in the match.

After a kill from Ylenia De Mango, AUM found themselves leading 7-5 early in the fourth set. Mississippi College took six consecutive points after the early AUM advantage to take an 11-7 lead. AUM would crawl back to cut the MC lead to 15-13, but the Choctaws kept their distance from AUM and would take the fourth set 25-18 and the match 3-1.
