MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery Men's Soccer Team will resume its 2021 postseason run with a "Sweet 16" matchup at #1 Young Harris College on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 5:00 p.m. (CST).
The Warhawks (11-4-3) knocked off #9 Tampa 1-0 their last time out on Sunday, Nov. 21 in the round of 32. Senior midfielder
Nathaniel Grant booted home the golden goal to clinch AUM's first ever NCAA postseason victory with just 13 seconds left in overtime.
AUM earned the number-five seed in Super Region 2 after posting a 10-4-3 record, highlighted by a second-place finish in the Gulf South Conference Regular Season Standings and a trip to the Gulf South Conference Postseason Tournament Semifinals.
Senior goalkeeper
Alexander Kraus headlines an AUM defense that has recorded nine shutouts and conceded just 14 goals in 18 contests, for an average of just 0.71 per game. Kraus, who was named All-GSC First Team, GSC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and most recently D2CCA All-South Region First Team, currently ranks second in the country in both goals against average (0.47) and save percentage (86 percent).
Franck Kouentchi leads AUM with five goals scored while
Phillip Spickenbaum (four),
Renan Diniz (three),
Juan del Castillo (three),
Andrew Elkins (three), and
Jamos Hauk (three) have all scored three or more times this season.
Glenn Waters and
Landon Surratt both pace the Orange and Black with five assists each.
#1 Young Harris comes in with a record of 18-0-1, which has earned them the top seed in Super Region 2. The Mountain Lions defeated eighth-seeded Limestone University 2-0 in their round of 32 matchup on Sunday, Nov. 21.
The Mountain Lions have scored 55 goals through 19 games, for an average of 2.89 per contest. Freshmen Mikkel Goling (14) and Saad Maziane (12) have combined to score 26 goals on the season while junior Sondre Olsen, Goling, and Maziane all lead the Mountain Lions with five assists each.
Thursday's contest will mark for just the second meeting between AUM and Young Harris. The Mountain Lions bested the Warhawks 5-0 in their inaugural matchup on Sept. 18 of the 2018 season.
The winner of Thursday's match will go on to face the winner of the Nova Southeastern vs. Chowan University contest on Saturday, Dec. 4 in the Super Region 2 Championship, with a trip to the "Final Four" on the line.
