MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team pounded out 20 runs on 23 hits in their doubleheader sweep over Gulf South Conference foe Christian Brothers University on Saturday, Feb. 13 from Q.V. Lowe Field.
The Warhawks took game one 8-1 while winning game two 12-6. With the wins, AUM improves to 3-2 on the season.
As a team, the Warhawks batted .344 (15-44) on the day with runners on base, and reached base to lead off an inning in 10 of 16 frames.
GAME ONE
Joseph Hartsfield tallied a team-high two base hits in game one, with an RBI and a run scored.
Jackson Ceman drove in a game-high two runs while scoring once.
Grayson Blackwell and
Quinterrious Arrington both scored twice, with Blackwell also picking up an RBI in the contest and Arrington stealing a base.
Casey Henderson and
Landon Pritchett both also added a hit and an RBI.
Armstrong, Ceman, and
Presston Hope all knocked a double for AUM in game one.
Hunter Viets (1-0) was sharp for the Orange and Black in his first career win as a Warhawk. The sophomore righty tossed seven scoreless innings, striking out six and giving up just two base hits.
Tyler Britton surrendered just one earned run over the final two frames while striking out two.
AUM broke the scoreless tie in their first at bat, when Arrington was driven in by Pritchett via a sacrifice fly. Arrington led off with by reaching base via CBU error, where he'd eventually find himself on third for the sacrifice opportunity.
The Warhawks piled on four runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of three Buccaneer errors and an RBI knock from C. Henderson to account for the damage.
AUM added three more runs in the third, with RBI contributions from Blackwell, Hartsfield and Ceman in the inning to make the score 8-0 in favor of the Warhawks.
The Buccaneers notched their lone run of the game in the ninth inning before giving way to the 8-1 final score.
GAME TWO
C. Henderson led AUM at the dish in game two with a three-hit, three-RBI effort. The senior second baseman also scored twice.
Matthew Marfice, Ceman, and Hartsfield all recorded a pair of base hits and an RBI, with Marfice and Ceman both slugging a double and Hartsfield scoring twice.
Sage Smelley,
Reid Whitaker and Arrington all scored twice in game two, with Smelley also adding a hit and an RBI and Arrington registering a hit and a stolen base.
Sam Steigert (1-0) grabbed the win in game two. The junior sidewinder struck out four over 2.1 innings of work while surrendering just one run. Starter
Troy Jones struck out five batters over 4.1 innings and gave up just one earned.
Jax Morris and
Jake Chase tossed the final two innings, with Morris surrendering no runs and Chase giving up just one on a pair of strikeouts.
AUM wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game two, with five two-out runs in the first inning. An RBI hit batsman by Smelly, an RBI walk from Hartsfield, and a pair of CBU errors accounted for the inning's run total in the first.
CBU responded quickly, however, with a pair of runs in their next at-bat in the top of the second. The Bucs tallied their run total on a bases-loaded walk, followed by an advancement by a Buccaneer runner on a dropped infield fly.
After getting an RBI single from C. Henderson in the fourth to make it a 6-2 AUM lead, the Warhawks would go on to tack on four more runs in the fifth inning. A Ceman RBI double, a CBU wild pitch, and a two-RBI knock from C. Henderson spearheaded the scoring efforts for AUM in the inning.
The Warhawks would tally their final two runs of the contest in the seventh inning, courtesy of an Armstrong sac fly and a Marfice RBI double to left.
The baseball team will play the third and final game of their weekend series with Christian Brothers on Sunday, Feb. 14 at 11:00 a.m. from Q.V. Lowe Field.
