MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team opened its season off in spectacular fashion on Sunday with a 9-1 win over Columbus State and an 11-4 victory over Spring Hill College
The Warhawks have now won nine consecutive games dating back to last season and start the year 2-0 after the pair of home wins.
Newcomer
Kathryn Fallen was among the standouts in game one. The freshman netted two hits in the contest and drove in a game-high two runs.
Alanna Goble, meanwhile, got the opening day assignment and threw four innings, giving up three hits while striking out four.
The scoring got started early for AUM as they raced out to a lead in the first inning.
Molly Cobb was able to place a bunt perfectly in the infield to score
Olivia Aycock from third, opening the door for
Abby Krueger to draw a walk with the bases loaded to give AUM a quick 2-0 lead.
AUM was not done, however, as
Kendall Tucker beat out a throw to first, allowing Cobb to score from third to give the Warhawks their third run of the game. With the bases loaded,
Parker Pinholster took a pitch to the shoulder to score the fourth AUM run.
The Goble shutout and no-hitter would end in the top of the third when her counterpart launched a home run over the right-field wall to get Columbus State on the board.
The Warhawks responded with a flurry of runs in the bottom half of the inning. A Pinholster bunt created chaos for the Cougar's defense as two runs would score from the senior's bunt.
Allie Miller would create havoc in her plate appearance in the third, singling to the third basemen, then stalling on the bases long enough for Aycock and Pinholster to score.
Fallen concluded the Warhawk scoring in the game with a two-run single, scoring the speedy runners of Aycock and Miller.
Freshman
Brinkley Yevak was tasked to start the second game for AUM. However, her start did not go as smoothly as Goble in game one. With runners on first and second with two outs in the first, a ball was hit to left-center field, resulting in some miscommunication from the AUM outfield, allowing two Spring Hill runs to score.
Fallen would answer with an RBI single in the bottom of the first to cut the Badger lead in half, but Spring Hill would add two more runs in the top of the second, forcing Yevak out of the game and taking a 4-1 lead.
Gia Martin started her college career off with a bang as she launched a triple to left field, plating Krueger from third after a triple of her own. With another run already in for AUM, Pinholster was able to give the Warhawks a 5-4 lead with a towering home run over left field.
In the following inning, Martin added on to her hot start by sending her second career hit over the center-field wall.
Hannah Dailey and Krueger wanted to join in on the home run parade as they both connected for a round-tripper and AUM would cruise to an 11-4 win.
Cydney Sizemore was brilliant in relief of her teammate Yevak, throwing 5.1 innings and striking out a career-high eight hitters in the process. The senior hurler surrendered just four hits in over five innings of work.
The Warhawks will hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday, February 20, when they will take on Columbus State for a doubleheader. The action from Columbus, Ga., is slated to begin at noon.
