COLUMBUS, Ga. – Led at the plate by freshman utility player
Gia Martin, the Auburn University at Montgomery softball team swept the Saturday doubleheader at Columbus State, winning 4-2 and 7-4.
With the win, the Warhawks have now won their first four games of the season, three of them coming against Columbus State. AUM has also won 11-consecutive games dating back to the shortened 2020 season.
Home runs were a big part in the game one win for AUM as three players registered a big fly.
Molly Cobb,
Jaycie Walker and Martin all registered a solo home run in the 4-2 victory.
Bailie Barnes was stellar in the circle for AUM in game one. She spun six innings of two-hit ball, surrendering eight hits while striking out three.
Alanna Goble was able to come in and record a three-out save in the seventh inning.
It was a pitcher's duel through the first two innings of action as neither side could muster up any offense. The scoring drought was broken in the top of the third, however, when
Olivia Aycock drove in
Morgan Duschell from second base to give AUM a 1-0 lead.
The Warhawks exploded in the following inning as they were able to record three runs. The action started with a solo home run from Cobb over the right-field wall. Two batters later, Walker and Martin hit back to back home runs to give AUM a 4-0 lead.
The fifth and sixth inning gave Barnes her first real trouble of the game as they were only able to push across one run in each inning, despite having the bases loaded in both innings.
Goble came into the game in the seventh to close the door on the Cougars. She recorded two strikeouts and a groundout to earn her first career save.
Game two was dominated by Martin at the plate. She finished game two going 3-3 at the plate with an RBI double and a two-run home run. In total, she drove in four runs with two home runs and three extra-base hits.
Goble got the ball to begin game two for the Warhawks after earning the save in game one. She threw five innings, giving up five hits, two runs while striking out five Cougars.
Martin and the Warhawks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game two. In the second inning, with
Gracie Harris pinch running at second base, Martin launched her second home run of the day to give the Orange & Black a 2-0 lead.
Miller was able to create havoc on the bases with her legs in the top of the third after reaching base on a bunt single. Miller was able to steal second base and was eventually brought home by an RBI single from
Kathryn Fallen.
Facing a 4-0 deficit, Elyse Ambrose cut the AUM lead in half with a two-run home run, the first blemish on Goble's night. In the sixth, Martin was able to give the Warhawks an insurance run with an RBI double. However, a Morgan Elston home run erased the run scored by
Peri Clark.
Miller would give the Warhawks two more runs in the seventh inning after scoring Aycock on a bunt single, then subsequently coming around to score on a wild pitch a few minutes later. With
Brinkley Yevak in to close the game, Columbus State added one more run
before the freshman shut down Columbus State for a 7-4 win.
The Warhawks will return home to open Gulf South Conference play on Friday, February 26, when they host Lee for a three-game series. The action on Friday from the AUM Softball Complex is scheduled to begin at 3 PM.
