Warhawks Hang on Late to Take Series Opener

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team was able to close out a tight game against Gulf South Conference foe Lee at home on Friday afternoon in the series opener to win the game 4-1.

The Warhawks stretch their win streak to 12 games dating back to last year after the series-opening win and improve their 2021 record to 5-0. Lee, meanwhile, falls to 5-3 on the year and drops to 3-1 in Gulf South Conference action.

Molly Cobb continued her hot start to the season with a three-hit, three-RBI performance against the Lady Flames, including a hard-hit line-drive home run to give the Warhawks a 3-0 lead at the time.

With Allie Miller on second base for the Warhawks in the first, Cobb stepped up to the plate and roped a ball in front of the right fielder, allowing Miller to barely beat the throw home to score the first run of the game.

The following two innings left a lot to be desired from both offenses as neither team could cash in with runners in scoring position. Alanna Goble stranded runners on second base in both the second and third inning to keep the Warhawk lead at one.

Cobb stepped up against the Lady Flame starter with Miller on base again, and the sophomore first basemen was able to launch a missile over the left-field wall to give the Orange & Black a three-run lead. This was Cobb's second home run of the season.

The following inning showcased more of the Warhawks' power at the plate as senior outfielder Parker Pinholster connected on a moonshot that hit the AUM scoreboard in center field for her second big fly of the season, giving the Warhawks a four-run lead.

Goble was able to battle in the middle innings, keeping the Lady Flames off the scoreboard while limiting the damage despite a multitude of baserunners.

With a 4-0 lead and just three hits allowed in the seventh inning, Goble ran into a bases-loaded and nobody-out situation. Lee was able to scratch across one run before Goble, and the Warhawks retired the side, giving the sophomore her first complete game of the season and AUM's first conference victory.

Games two and three of the opening Gulf South Conference series between these two teams will take place at the AUM Softball Complex tomorrow afternoon, beginning at noon.
