Warhawks Use Two Complete Games to Sweep Embers Off Lady Flames

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery softball team used complete-game efforts from Bailie Barnes and Cydney Sizemore to earn a Gulf South Conference series sweep over the Lee University Lady Flames.

The Warhawks defeated Lee 10-2 and 5-0 on Saturday, earning their seventh win in a row to begin the year and run their win streak to 14 consecutive games dating back to last season. Lee's record this season falls to 5-5 on the year and 3-3 in GSC play.

In game one, the Warhawks used nine stolen bases to cruise to a 10-2 victory over Lee. No AUM player got more than one hit as AUM was outhit 7-4 in the first contest. However, AUM used excellent baserunning to run off to a game-one victory.

AUM raced off to an early lead once again in the first inning. With two runners on and a dangerous Molly Cobb at the plate, she was able to rope a single up the middle to score Abby Krueger from third and Allie Miller from second.

Lee's Laney Harris was able to cut the lead in half in the top of the second with a solo shot to center, but the lead would not last for long as the Warhawks were able to answer in the bottom half.

Morgan Duschell was able to lay down a bunt that sparked the AUM offense in the second, scoring Parker Pinholster. Duschell, later in the inning, scored on a wild pitch that plated the Warhawks' fourth run of the game.

With Cobb and Krueger on base, Jaycie Walker used her power to score the two Warhawks on a two-run double to right-centerfield. AUM's scoring in the second ended with a Gia Martin RBI single that plated Walker to run the score to 7-1.

AUM was able to keep the good times rolling in the bottom of the third inning with more explosive offense. An RBI groundout from Olivia Aycock scored Pinholster and the eighth run of the game for AUM, while a fielder's choice from Allie Miller allowed Duschell to score the ninth run of the game.

Sizemore's five solid innings propelled the Warhawks to an easy 10-2 win over Lee. She allowed seven hits, two earned runs and struck out two for her second win of the season. Sizemore is now 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA on the year.

The Warhawk bats came alive in game two, along with a stellar performance from Barnes in the circle. AUM got their scoring done early on in the game and relied on Barnes to finish off the sweep of the Lady Flames.

A mishandled ball behind the plate by Lee's catcher got the offense started for AUM, as Miller was able to come across to score on a passed ball to give the Orange & Black an early 1-0 lead.

The third inning featured the Warhawk's gap power as Walker and Kathryn Fallen traded doubles to plate the second and third runs of the game for the Warhawks for an early 3-0 lead.

The rest of the scoring for the series would come in the fourth inning as a Hannah Dailey RBI single and an RBI walk from Jaycie Walker pushed the AUM lead to 5-0, and that proved to be all the offense the Warhawks needed.

In the circle, Barnes spun one of her best games as a Warhawk. She tossed all seven innings for AUM while allowing just three hits and striking out a career-high nine batters. The senior hurler has now raised her 2021 record to 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 14 innings of work.

AUM will begin a five-game road trip on Monday when they travel to St. Augustine, Fla., to face off against Peach Belt Conference foe Flagler in a doubleheader. The action from Flagler is set to begin at 11 a.m.
