MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team took advantage of four home runs and seven extra-base hits on their way to knocking off the #9 ranked Lee Flames in their series finale on Sunday, Feb. 28 from Q.V. Lowe Field.
Sunday's game featured 29 combined runs, 34 combined hits, 13 combined extra-base hits and five combine home runs.
The win improves AUM's record to 6-6 both overall and in Gulf South Conference play. The Flames fall to 11-2 overall and 10-1 in GSC action.
The Warhawks pounded out 19 hits on the day, their most since a 22-hit performance at West Alabama on Feb. 16 of the 2019 season. AUM's 16 runs scored marked for the most by the Orange and Black since their 19-7 win at Alabama-Huntsville on April 2, 2019.
Four different Warhawks homered in the contest, the most since the their 8-0 win over Spring Hill College on April 16, 2019 in which four AUM players also went yard.
Quinterrious Arrington,
Jackson Ceman,
Zach Feaster and
Ethan Wells all accounted for a round-tripper in Sunday's win.
Ceman led AUM at the plate on Sunday with video-game numbers. The freshman outfielder finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 4-5 with five runs driven in, three scored, a double and a home run.
Arrington also logged four hits, in addition to recording three runs scored, three runs driven in, a homer and a stolen base.
Joseph Hartsfield tallied three hits with two runs scored while Feaster, Smelley and Marfice all socked a pair of base hits.
Casey Henderson and Marfice each slugged a double for AUM.
Starting pitcher
Troy Jones surrendered just three runs over 4.2 innings of work but fell victim to the unearned run, finishing the day with eight total runs allowed. The senior righty struck out three batters and walked none.
Will Collins (1-1) earned his first career win for AUM, giving up just one earned over 0.2 innings pitched.
Jax Morris (1) tossed the final 2.2 frames to grab his first career save for the Orange and Black.
The Warhawks scored a combined five runs over their first two at-bats, with two in the first and three in the second after giving up a pair in the top of the second to the Flames. Ceman, C. Henderson and Marfice all contributed with RBI doubles over AUM's first two at-bats to see them lead 5-2 after two.
After seeing the Flames scratch a run in the third, AUM would pile on two more runs in the fourth on Arrington's first career homer as a Warhawk to go up 7-3.
Lee kicked it into overdrive in their next two at-bats, plating a combined nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings to take a 12-7 lead. All five of Lee's runs in the fifth came in the unearned variety.
The Warhawks snatched the game's momentum back on their side in the sixth inning, scoring eight runs on nine hits, including a pair of homers.
Ceman's two-run blast brought the score to 12-9, and a towering three-run shot by Wells after a Smelley RBI-single put the Warhawks ahead 13-12. A pair of RBI singles from Arrington and Ceman accounted for the final damage in the sixth to put AUM up 15-12.
The Warhawks matched the Flames run total in the seventh via a Feaster solo shot to left. The blast marked for his second of the year.
Morris would work his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to slam the door shut and clinch the 16-13 victory.
The Warhawks batted .475 (19-40) on the day, including a mark of .500 (11-22) with runners on. AUM left just five runners on base, while Warhawk pitching stranded 10 Flame baserunners.
The baseball team will be back in action on Wednesday, March 3 when they host Miles College. First pitch from Q.V. Lowe Field is set for 4:00 p.m. (CST).
