MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Auburn Montgomery baseball team used a six-run fourth inning and a five-run sixth inning to slug their way to an 11-8 victory over the West Georgia Wolves in game three of their Gulf South Conference series on Monday, Feb. 8.
With the win, AUM improves to 1-2 on the season, while West Georgia drops to 2-1.
Jackson Ceman led AUM at the plate on Monday, finishing with two hits, two runs scored, and two runs driven in; all career-bests for the freshman outfielder.
Quinterrious Arrington and
Joseph Hartsfield both logged a pair of hits, with Arrington scoring twice, driving in two, and stealing a base.
Landon Pritchett also drove in a pair of runs for AUM, with one run scored on one hit.
Sage Smelley and
Matthew Marfice both scored twice, with Smelley accounting for an RBI and Marfice knocking the Warhawks' lone double of the contest.
Micah Henderson (1-0) earned the win on the mound. The senior righty surrendered four runs over five innings while striking out four en route to his first victory of 2021.
Tommy Vickers (1) slammed the door shut with a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first collegiate save. Vickers and
Jake Chase combined to toss 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to help seal the deal for the Warhawks.
The Wolves broke the scoreless tie in the third inning, when an errant Warhawk throw down to third would allow the game's first run to cross home. UWG would get another run in the fourth on a solo shot to left.
AUM responded in their next at-bat, however, by batting around and scoring six runs on three hits.
A
Corey Armstrong single through the left side brought in the Warhawks' first run of the inning, followed by a bases-loaded walk from Smelley to even the game at 2-2. AUM would then get a pair of clutch two-out, two-run singles from Arrington and Ceman to take a 6-2 lead through four.
West Georgia responded with three runs on four hits in the fifth, but AUM would quickly thwart the Wolves' momentum with another big inning; batting around again in the sixth inning and this time scoring five runs on five hits.
The Warhawks were able to capitalize on a UWG wild pitch while getting an RBI single from Hartsfield, an RBI fielder's choice from
Casey Henderson, and a two-RBI knock from Pritchett to account for the damage in the frame.
West Georgia once again responded their next time up with a three-run seventh inning, ending with Chase coming in from the bullpen to record the final out of the frame and stop the bleeding.
Eight of nine Warhawk hitters logged a hit, eight scored a run, and seven drove in a run on the day.
The Warhawks stranded just five base runners on the day, while the Wolves left nine on base. AUM batted .388 (7-18) as a team on the day with runners in scoring position.
The Warhawks will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 13 when they host Christian Brothers for a Gulf South Conference doubleheader. First pitch from Q.V. Lowe Field is slated for 1:00 p.m.
