MONTGOMERY, Ala. The Auburn University at Montgomery women's basketball team fell at home to Gulf South Conference foe West Florida on Tuesday night 70-46 in their return to action.
The Warhawks drop to 0-7 on the year while West Florida holds on to fourth place in the East Division with a 7-6 record.
"We looked like a team that had been shut down for 20 days and played one game in the last month," said head coach
Sean Page. "We had no rhythm or timing and really had trouble getting anything going. Hopefully, now we can stay on the court and get some practice time in and get better."
West Florida was able to jump out to a commanding lead early on in the first quarter that eventually forced an AUM timeout. The Argonauts had an 11-3 lead over the Warhawks late in the first quarter before
Jamya Tyus's layup got the Warhawks closer before the first quarter expired.
Alexia Wallace had a team-high 14 points in Tuesday's contest, with two of them to open up the scoring in the second quarter to cut the West Florida lead to 15-9. A 12-2 West Florida run followed Wallace's jumper, giving the Argos a 27-11 lead in the middle stages of the second. UWF would continue the offensive push and led 33-16 going into the halftime break.
Tyra Johnson recorded her first points as a Warhawk to begin the scoring for AUM in the third quarter. Points from a trio of Warhawks, including Brewster, Tyus and Wallace, helped cut the lead down to 14 to force a West Florida timeout, but another lengthy run from the Argos put the Warhawks in a 57-35 hold to end the third quarter.
The fourth quarter presented a back-and-forth battle between the two sides, as the Warhawks would only be outscored by two points in the final frame. However, the West Florida lead was too much to overcome for the Orange & Black as they would eventually fall at home 70-46.
AUM's penultimate homestand will conclude this weekend with a two-game series with the No. 10-ranked Valdosta State Lady Blazers on Friday and Saturday. The action from the AUM Gymnasium on Friday, Feb. 12, will begin at 6 p.m.
