HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Auburn University at Montgomery fell in the bottom of the seventh 6-5 in game one, and rebounded with a 4-2 win over No. 25 and Gulf South Conference rival Alabama Huntsville on the road on Saturday.
After going 1-1 on Saturday, the Warhawks now stand at 16-3 on the season with an 8-3 record in GSC action. The Chargers, meanwhile, are now 13-7 in 2021.
Allie Miller was the only Warhawk to net a multi-hit game for AUM in the first contest against UAH, connecting on her first home run of the season while also adding a double and two runs in the loss to the Chargers.
Alabama Huntsville opened up the scoring early in the game, connecting on runs in the first and second inning with RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead over the Warhawks in game one of the doubleheader.
AUM was finally able to crack through the Charger pitchers when
Olivia Aycock doubled to left-center field to score
Hannah Dailey, giving the Warhawks their first run of the game, cutting the UAH lead to 2-1.
The Warhawks continued their scoring streak in the following inning when rookie
Gia Martin launched her team-leading seventh home run of the season over the right-field wall to tie the game at two. Miller was able to launch her second career home run to give the Warhawks a 3-2 lead.
Late runs for the Warhawks added some insurance heading into the seventh, as a Martin sac fly, and an RBI bunt from Aycock gave the Orange & Black a 5-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
With the bases loaded for UAH, Ayckock booted a ball hit to short with one out in the inning, allowing the Chargers to cut the lead to 5-3.
Chanel Newcomer came into the ballgame and hit a batter, scoring the fourth run for UAH, then the following hitter launched a ball over the left fielder's head to score two runs, giving the Chargers the win.
The Warhawks used four stolen bases in game two to split the doubleheader.
Parker Pinholster netted two steals, while Miller and Martin added a stolen base in the win.
Molly Cobb and
Morgan Duschell recorded multi-hit efforts in game two. Cobb was 2-3 with a walk and an RBI, while Duschell was 2-4 with an RBI.
Scoring for the Warhawks came quickly in the third inning after the two starters held the offenses at bay through two innings.
With two away in the third, Miller was able to score from second on a throwing error off the bat of Aycock. Cobb raced an RBI single up the middle to score the Warhawk shortstop, while a Duschell RBI scored
Gracie Harris to give AUM a 3-0 lead.
UAH was able to push across a run in the following inning with an RBI single to cut the AUM lead to 3-1 after four innings of action.
Pinholster added the Warhawks' fourth run on an RBI single to left field, scoring
Abby Krueger from second base after
Gracie Poe registered a pinch-hit single. UAH in the bottom of the seventh scored a run on an error from
Hannah Dailey, but Newcomer was able to complete the save, giving AUM the win.
Alanna Goble spun 4.2 innings of action in game two, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out three.
Game three of the series will begin at 1 p.m. tomorrow from Huntsville, as the Warhawks will look for the series win over #25 UAH.
